COPENHAGEN (IPS/TerraViva) “We have an enormous influence, because the issue of climate change has been carried forward by organised civil society. The corporate lobby is also very powerful, which is why society cannot advance as fast as it would like,” said Argentine activist Marta Zogbi of Friends of the Earth International, one of the organisers of the march.

“Corporations are pressing for the carbon market as a solution, but we say it is a false solution because it will only benefit big business, and not the poor,” she told Terraviva.

On this cold winter morning in Copenhagen, Zogbi repeated one of the central ideas shared by the social organisations taking part in COP15 and the parallel events: “We don’t want a political agreement, but a binding one, in which countries commit themselves to implementing a fairer treaty so the poor don’t have to pay for climate catastrophes.”
