COPENHAGEN (IPS/TerraViva) – Accusing developed nations of attempting to kill the Kyoto Protocol and refusing to meet emissions cuts and funding obligations, the Climate Justice Action, a global network of NGOs, is saying disrupting the process is the only way forward.
“We’re trying to get parties to disrupt the sessions inside the Bella Centre and walk out,” said Climate Justice Action spokesperson Dan Glall. “We’re calling for more people – especially parties – to join us as we voice our concerns outside.”
In trying to rally support for the plan, CJA is circulating flyers inviting delegates to join them at the entrance of the conference venue for a demonstration.
“As a condition for going back to the negotiations, we demand industrialised nations uphold the Kyoto Protocol, commit adequate funds to adaptation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly,” said Glall.
The protest call is a bold move, and some participants are finding it hard to buy the idea. Many people felt they wouldn’t participate because the process has come too far to throw up everything into the air at this point. ”I think parties are now coming closer to some kind of compromise,” said Joseph Henry Vogel, an observer from the University of Puerto Rico.
However others are joining the fray, anticipating an event that will attract a lot of media attention and put pressure on world leaders to come up with an ambitious deal at COP 15.
