Local Communities Protect Their Amazon

LIMA, Jan 16, 2011 (Tierramérica) – San Martín is one of the three most deforested Amazon regions in Peru. But now local residents and non-governmental organisations have joined with local and regional authorities to defend the flora, fauna and water resources and halt the destruction of the rainforests.

A população que vigia sua Amazônia

LIMA, Peru, 10 de janeiro, (IPS TerraViva) Habitantes e autoridades de uma região peruana tomaram em suas mãos a tarefa de conservar as florestas.

San Martín é uma das três regiões amazônicas mais desmatadas do Peru. Entretanto, ali, organizações sociais e moradores aproximaram-se das autoridades locais e regionais para defender a flora, a fauna e as fontes de água, e também para deter a depredação das florestas. Enquanto as águas dos rios secavam, foi crescendo o interesse das pessoas de San Martín, na selva central peruana, em solicitar ao Estado concessões de conservação em terrenos públicos de grande diversidade biológica. LIMA, 28 oct (IPS/TerraViva) – Cuatro meses atrás se produjo el mayor derrame de residuos mineros peligrosos en Perú. Hoy los trabajadores de la empresa Caudalosa reclaman que ésta vuelva a funcionar, y los pobladores de la zona que se limpien los ríos contaminados, de los que dependen.

LIMA, Aug 12, 2010 (IPS) – The families of 40 villagers murdered in Peru on Christmas Day in 1984 are camping out next to the eight graves in which their loved ones were buried, to keep watch over the slow, painful process of exhuming the bodies, a task that is being carried out by the public prosecutor’s office.
