Roberto Savio |

(Chairman, President Emeritus)
An internationally renowned expert in communications issues,
Roberto Savio has founded numerous news and information
projects, always with an emphasis on the developing world:
Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency, the pioneering
Technological Information Pilot System (TIPS), the network
of national information systems for Latin America and
the Caribbean (ASIN), the Latin American features service
ALASEI and the Women's Feature Service. He is now IPS
President Emeritus.

Mário Soares |

Mário Soares, lawyer, historian and politician
- president of Portugal from 1986 to 1996 - was born
in Lisbon on Dec. 7, 1924. He married Maria Barroso
in 1949, has a daughter, a son and 3 grandchildren.
He graduated in Historical-Philosophical Sciences in
1951 and in Law in 1957 at Lisbon University. He taught
at a private secondary school and was director of the
Colégio Moderno, in Lisbon. He practised law
for some years and during his exile in France he was
“Chargé de Cours” at Vincennes University
and at the Sorbonne. He was associate professor at the
Faculty of Arts of Haute Bretagne (Rennes). More recently,
he was guest professor in International Relations at
the School of Economics of the University of Coimbra.

Federico Mayor Zaragoza |

Federico Mayor Zaragoza was born in Barcelona in 1934.
He obtained a doctorate in pharmacy from the Universidad
Complutense of Madrid in 1958. In 1963 he became professor
of biochemistry at the School of Pharmacy of the University
of Granada, and in 1968 was elected Rector of the same
university, a post he held until 1972. The following
year he was appointed professor in biochemistry at the
Universidad Autónoma of Madrid.

Martti Ahtisaari |

Martti Ahtisaari served as president of the Republic
of Finland from Mar. 1, 1994 to Feb. 29, 2000. Upon
leaving office, Mr. Ahtisaari took on the co-chairmanship
of the New York-based EastWest Institute and the chairmanship
of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group. He
is a member of the joint advisers’ group for the
Open Society Institute and the Soros Foundations, which
operates in various countries. He also serves as chairman
of the Balkan Children and Youth Foundation and Global
Action Council of the International Youth Foundation,
as well as of the international board of the War-Torn
Societies Project. He is also a member of the Board
of Directors of the International Institute for Democracy
and Electoral Assistance (IDEA). Other post-presidential
activities have included inspection of the IRA's arms
dumps with fellow inspector Cyril Ramaphosa, and the
drafting of a report on the human rights and political
situation in Austria as a member of a group of "three
wise men".

Boutros Boutros-Ghali |

Boutros Boutros-Ghali has been the president of South
Centre in Geneva since May 2003. He was elected the
first Secretary-General of the International Organisation
of the Francophonie at the VIIth Francophone Summit,
held in Vietnam in November 1997. The former U.N. Secretary-General
(1992-1996) is a diplomat, lawyer, academic and author
of numerous publications.

Inder Kumar Gujral |

Inder Kumar Gujral was India's Prime Minister from
1997 to 1998. He served as Minister of External Affairs
(1989-1990 and 1996-1997), Minister in charge of several
portfolios from 1967 to 1976, and Ambassador to the
USSR from 1976 to 1980. Chancellor of Vishva Bharati
University (1997-99), he is presently Chancellor of
Maulana Azad National Urdu University. He was also leader
of the Indian delegation to the U.N. in 1990, 1997 and
1998, member of the Indian delegation to the U.N. session
on environment in Stockholm in 1972, alternate leader
of the Indian delegation to the UNESCO sessions in 1970,
1972 and 1974. He has served as a special envoy to several
nations in Africa, and to Bulgaria and was the accompanying
Minister to President of India during state visits to
Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Egypt and Sudan.
