IPS-Inter Press Service was founded in 1964 by Italian-Argentine journalist Dr Roberto Savio and Argentine journalist Pablo Piacentini.

IPS is an international, not-for-profit association of professional journalists and others in the field of communications. It has no national or political base and pursues the objectives of balanced geographical, ethnic and gender representation.

IPS is dedicated to promoting democratic participation in economic, social and political life, the full involvement of the countries of the South in international policy-making and the full empowerment of women in the development process.

In addition, IPS promotes a global communication strategy that aims to bring together civil society, policy makers, and the media at national and international levels.

IPS qualifies in the United States as a 501(c) (3) foreign equivalent 1 organisation and enjoys NGO general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). IPS North America, Inc., based in New York, is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit corporation.
