BACKGROUND
As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and interconnected, we face global challenges that require global solutions. At the Global Citizen Festival on 28 September 2014, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called upon the audience of more than 60,000 people, many of them youth: “A better world is around the corner. As united nations – as united global citizens – let’s commit to get there together!”
In this process, our individual identities, too, begin to transcend national boundaries. What is required is that we develop a sense of ‘global citizenship’. Though it is a common terminology, which suggests people’s increased interests in and awareness on the concept, the definition of a global citizen can be broad and diverse. This presents an excellent opportunity to explore the concept and come to a deeper understanding of global citizenship, together with multiple stakeholders such as member states, the UN offices and agencies, and civil society.
