The leaders of the United States and several European countries including Germany and France affirmed, Monday, January 24, during a videoconference, their support ” without reservation “ to the territorial integrity of Ukraine and promised “very serious consequences” to Russia in case “aggression” against this country.

The participants “were all of the opinion that it is up to Russia to undertake visible de-escalation initiatives” in this conflict, indicated the spokesman for the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, at the end of this meeting in which the latter took part in particular with the leaders of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, the Italy and Poland.

The holding of this videoconference had been announced a little earlier in the day by the White House at a time when certain differences seemed to appear within the Western camp on the attitude to adopt towards Russia.

This concerns in particular Berlin, much criticized by Ukraine for its refusal in particular to deliver weapons, even defensive ones, unlike the United States, the United Kingdom or the Baltic countries.

Similarly, the countries of the European Union have not yet decreed the departure of part of their diplomatic personnel from Ukraine, while Washington and London have made announcements to this effect.

“Strong and credible warnings”

At the end of the meeting, Joe Biden assured that there was a “total unanimity with European leaders” in the Ukrainian crisis. For his part, the French president in a press release indicated that the “de-escalation must go through the expression of firm and credible warnings with regard to Russia, which requires constant coordination between European partners and allies”.

During their videoconference, which was also attended by the NATO Secretary General, Western leaders expressed their “great concern” in the face of the regrouping of Russian troops on the eastern border of Ukraine and accused Moscow of being at the origin of the “current tensions”, according to the Berlin press release.

Nevertheless, they felt that “the issue of security and stability in Europe could be resolved through negotiation”. Paris has therefore called for “a strengthened dialogue with Russia”.

Westerners have “reaffirmed to be willing to continue diplomatic efforts in this direction”, undertaken during the month of January with several meetings between Western and Russian officials. No visible success, however, so far.

The leaders notably mentioned the so-called “Normandy format” discussions, which bring together representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France. The Elysée has announced the holding of a meeting on this subject “at the level of advisers in Paris this Wednesday, January 26”. Emmanuel Macron has also planned to meet “in the next few days” with the Russian and Ukrainian presidents.

“It is not normal for around twenty individuals to harm the image of a district where the majority of the inhabitants want to live in peace”, pointed out this Monday morning in the columns of the Telegram, the mayor of Brest François spoon. But who are the people behind the serious incidents, noted in recent days in the district of Pontanézen?

neighborhood children

This Monday, January 24, during the press conference organized at the sub-prefecture, the central commissioner of Brest, Nicolas Hoarau, returned to the profile of the people targeted. “Last Wednesday’s episode, where eight individuals were arrested during the police operation, is quite significant,” explained the central commissioner.

“This sample is revealing of what is the hard core of crime in the Pontanézen district: minors, of course, but also young adults who had to be brought to justice in an immediate appearance last Friday. They are mainly young people from the neighborhood. We are also interested in a few outside individuals. But most of this hard core is from Pontanézen. For many, they are known to the police and justice services.

“More violent and hostile” urban excesses

The central commissioner Nicolas Hoarau estimates at “about thirty”, the number of individuals “that we find during episodes of urban drifts”. If the number of violent acts does not increase significantly, according to the police, the commissioner observes “a rise in power of the expression of urban excesses: much more violent and hostile. With a modus operandi that has appeared: the use of artificial mortar. This is a phenomenon that was not observed in Brest in previous years and Pontanézen is no exception to this drift. This implies adapting our operating methods so as to ensure tranquility on public roads in the district”.

It was an organized rain of complaints against the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, and three members of the government. The Requests Commission of the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) received 19,685, between July 28 and December 31, 2021. They denounced the management of the health crisis by the government, and especially the health pass, of same as the compulsory vaccination against Covid-19. The CJR, the only court empowered to prosecute and try ministers in office, dismissed them all without further action. This was announced by the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation, François Molins, in a press release issued Monday, January 24.

These complaints were reviewed between November 2021 and January. They had all been pre-drafted by lawyer and anti-vaccine activist Fabrice Di Vizio. The one who also defends Professor Didier Raoult and regularly intervened on the sets of Cyril Hanouna on C8 had traded on the Internet in these pre-written complaints, which flooded the CJR. In addition to the head of government, they targeted the minister of health, Olivier Veran, the minister of national education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, and the minister delegate in charge of transport, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari.

These complaints were aimed at Mr. Castex and Mr. Véran for “misdemeanor of abstaining from fighting a claim”, “extortion offence”, “misleading advertising offence”, “crime of non-compliance with obligations”, based on articles of the penal code, public health, consumption. They criticized the measures to introduce the health pass and defended the idea that the Prime Minister “exercises a moral constraint in conscience to compel the French to be vaccinated”. Regarding Mr. Blanquer, he was accused of having “intentionally exercised moral duress” to force children to get vaccinated and “treat unfavourably” those who were not. Mr. Djebbari was accused of not having “taken no measures to protect French citizens from the risk of contamination” in transport, based on distorted statements.

“Positive acts and not abstentions”

The CJR’s Requests Committee considers that the health pass and the vaccination obligation constitute “positive acts and not abstentions”. It also notes that Mr. Djebbari’s words were “taken out of context” and in no way demonstrate the lack of measures put forward in the complaints. The “moral constraint” cannot be retained either, specifies the press release, because “the health pass does not[est] not mandatory and there are alternatives to lead a normal daily life”. As to what the author of the complaints, Mre Di Vizio, qualifies as “advertising videos”, it is actually a “institutional communication in times of health crisis”. All the alleged infringements denounced in the complaints marketed by this lawyer have been deemed inadmissible. On November 8, 2021, the Paris Bar Council opened disciplinary proceedings against Me Di Vizio for his public positions and his professional practices.

The name of Angela Gorgone was buried deep in the collective memory of the small world of hockey. However, it resurfaced in the news on Monday for two reasons. One happy. The other, frankly less.

By accepting the position of assistant general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, Quebecer Émilie Castonguay succeeded Gorgone, the first woman to have reached such a high position in the NHL. So much for the positive part of the story. What is a bit embarrassing is that it was also the last. And that was a quarter of a century ago.

When they joined the NHL in 1993, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks were definitely the team cool Of time. It therefore made sense that it was this franchise that gave a woman a chance in an important position in hockey operations.

After a few seasons spent in the organization of the New Jersey Devils, where she held an administrative job, Gorgone therefore moved her household to California to become coordinator of the recruitment of the powerful ducks. Three years later, at the dawn of the 1996-97 season, she was promoted to assistant general manager Jack Ferreira. Never seen.

The Press was able to speak with M.me Gorgon, Monday. The one who left hockey years ago has completely changed careers. She now owns a pastry shop in the suburbs of San Francisco.

It is also through the Facebook page of Bake My Day that we traced it. And we can safely say that the appointment of Émilie Castonguay has indeed made its day.

“I’m excited!” she said straight away. It’s not easy for anyone, especially not a woman, to reach the top echelons of the NHL, so I applaud this achievement. I wish him all my congratulations. »

believe in them

The paths of Angela Gorgone and Émilie Castonguay, if they converge towards the same point, are not really alike. Gorgone was in her early twenties when she accepted her first job with the Devils, after studying sports administration. She learned the ropes of the trade within the organizations that employed her. Castonguay, she studied finance and law and made her mark as a respected players’ agent before joining the Canucks. She is now in her late thirties.

Where the two stories are identical is that, in an almost exclusively male world, leaders believed in them.

Gorgone readily lists them: Lou Lamoriello, Max McNab and Marshall Johnston with the Devils; Jack Ferreira and Pierre Gauthier with the Mighty Ducks; and David Poile, general manager of the Nashville Predators, who named her director of hockey operations when the team moved to the country town in 1997.

All of these people, she recalls, “were forward-thinking enough to look beyond the fact that I was a woman and focused on my ability to do the job.”

She is delighted today that more women occupy prestigious roles in the NHL. She spontaneously cites as examples Cammi Granato and Alexandra Mandrycky, respectively professional scout and director of strategy and research at the Seattle Kraken, as well as Hayley Wickenheiser, senior director of player development at the Toronto Maple Leafs.

She nevertheless says she is “surprised” that it took “25 or 30 years for women to begin to be considered in hockey operations positions like these”.

“I don’t want to speak for Emilie or anyone else, but I bet none of us ever had the goal of being the first woman to do this or that in the NHL. . »

“Like the men before us, we were passionate about hockey and determined to make it a career. We didn’t do it for fame and especially not for the label of being a “woman” in this sport. Like everyone else, we just wanted the chance to prove we’re up to it. »

Slowly, but surely, this is happening. Finally, might we add.

The Comoros played with an outfield player in goal the whole game and were reduced to 10 by the 7th minute. Despite this, Chaker Alhadhur and his teammates were heroic against the host country and only narrowly lost (2-1). This Monday evening, Cameroon may have qualified for the quarter-finals of the CAN, but the big winner is Comorian.

Cameroon 2-1 Comoros

Buts: Toko-Ekambi (29e) and Abubakar (70e) for the Indomitable Lions // Y. M’Changama (81e) for Coelacanths
Expulsion: Abdou for the Coelacanths

The game of shame, the free kick of the year.

With remarkable solidarity against the host country despite adverse events, the Comoros delivered a performance that will go down in history, but their adventure at CAN 2021 must end in the round of 16 (1-2). Cameroon has still not delivered a reference match and will have a hard time facing Gambia.

Alhadur, guardian of an evening

A dozen cases of Covid including coach Amir Abdou and charming asset Faïz Selemani, a goalkeeper – Chakher Alhadhur – who is not one and a derogation that does not pass. The Coelacanths had every reason in the world to consider themselves wronged and disadvantaged before facing the Indomitable Lions. As if to make matters worse, the Comorians are even reduced to ten after six short minutes, following an involuntary sole from Captain Abdou on Ngamaleu. However, despite the situations of Aboubakar and Toko-Ekambi, tension reigns on the Cameroonian side, as evidenced by the lack of assurance of André Onana on the slightest outing. And then Hongla enters the scene at the dry cleaners: on recovery, the Veronese initiates the opening of the score of Toko-Ekambi, shifted by Aboubakar (1-0, 29e).

M’Changama saves honor

More confident on his line, Onana is working, one after the other ahead of Mogni and Ben (33e), to preserve Cameroon’s advantage: first horizontally in front of Mogni, then with the tip of the foot in front of Ben (33e). Upon returning from the locker room, the Kmer delivers ten minutes of good quality, without managing to break, the fault with Alhadhur, not very academic, but remarkable in front of Aboubakar (49e). Inhabited, the defender of AC Ajaccio even pulls out a double save against the scorer of Al Nassr, then Ngamaleu (55e). The Comoros are always more engaged and fully exploit their counterattacks, the sentence ends up falling: Aboubakar plants his sixth CAN pawn (2-0, 70e). Close to madness, the end of the match sees Onana pull out an exceptional reflex parade to deflect the bombshell of Ben. But the future goalkeeper of Inter bows all the same once, on a bright free kick from Guingampais Youssouf M’Changama (2-1, 81e), customary of the fact in club as in selection.

Comorians, lift your hearts!

Cameroon (4-4-2): A. Onana – Fai, Castelletto, Ngadeu, Tolo – Moumi Ngamaleu (Bassogog, 63e), Zambo Anguissa (J. Onana, 84e), Hongla, Toko-Ekambi (Léa-Silk, 77e) – Choupo-Moting (Njie, 63e), Abubakar (Bahoken, 77e). Trainer: Tony Conceição.

Comoros (4-2-3-1): Alhadhur – M. Youssouf (I. Youssouf, 89e), Zahary, Abdou, Bakari (M’Madi, 88e) – Bachirou (Djoumoi, 89e), Abdullah – B. Youssouf (Mattoir, 75e), Y. M’Changama, Mogni (A. Mohamed, 52e) – Ben. Trainer: Younes Zerdouk.

PANDEMIC – The Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) dismissed the 19,685 “standard” complaints filed against several members of the government, denouncing in particular the health pass and the promotion of vaccination against Covid-19, announced, this Monday, January 24, the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation.

Written in identical terms from a paid form posted online by lawyer Fabrice Di Vizio, figure of the anti-vax movement and fierce critic of the government’s management of the health crisis, the complaints were filed between July 28 and on December 31, 2021 with the CJR’s Requests Commission. It is the only jurisdiction empowered to prosecute and try ministers for offenses committed in the exercise of their functions.

They targeted Prime Minister Jean Castex, Minister of Health Olivier Véran, Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer and Minister Delegate for Transport Jean-Baptiste Djebbari.

    “Positive acts”

In his press release, Attorney General François Molins, who acts as the public prosecutor at the CJR, explains that these complaints were examined by the Requests Commission in November, December and January, and that they were all dismissed. .

Some accused Jean Castex and Olivier Véran of “abstention from fighting a claim”. However, the commission considered that the health pass and the vaccination obligation constituted “positive acts and not abstentions”.

Others also targeted the Prime Minister and Jean-Michel Blanquer for “extortion”, arguing that “due to the regulations relating to the health pass”, they exercised “moral constraint” to “force the French to be vaccinated”.

    Véran accused of “false advertising”

But according to the commission, “the health pass is not compulsory and while there are alternatives to lead a normal daily life, no moral constraint (…) can be retained”.

Olivier Véran was also accused of “false advertising” for having promoted the vaccine in several advertising videos “while the extension of the marketing authorization to the group of people under 18 conditional is the subject of ‘appeal before the Court of Justice of the European Union’.

For the CJR, “in this case, it is about institutional communication in times of health crisis and not advertising for commercial purposes”.

    Agnes Buzyn indicted

Finally, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari was criticized for not having taken “any measure to protect French citizens from the risk of contamination” in public transport. For the commission, nothing establishes the absence of measure.

Since July 2020, the CJR has been carrying out an investigation into the government’s management of the Covid-19 epidemic, targeting the former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, the former Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn and Olivier Véran, who succeeded him. In September, the former Minister of Health was indicted for “endangering the lives of others” and placed under the more favorable status of assisted witness for “voluntary abstention from fighting a disaster”.

CANNABIS – New twist in the battle over the sale of products containing CBD. The Council of State has decided to temporarily suspend the government decree which prohibited the sale of flowers and raw cannabis leaves.

“The interim judge of the Council of State considers that there is a serious doubt about the legality of this general and absolute prohibition measure because of its disproportionate nature”, indicates the body in the decision made public on Monday, after the January 14 hearing.

According to the Council of State, “it does not appear, at the end of the contradictory instruction and the exchanges which took place during the public hearing, that the flowers and leaves of cannabis sativa L. whose THC content is less than 0.3% would present a degree of harmfulness to health justifying a total and absolute ban”.

    “The Battle Continues”

“This victory is that of the alliance of civil society and economic actors, it is historic, rejoiced Bechir Saket, one of the leaders of the L630 association. The battle continues.”

Yannick Jadot, environmental candidate for the presidential election, hailed “a historic victory”. “Bravo to all the actresses and actors involved,” he also added.

Another victory for the French CBD sector: the State was ordered to pay 1,000 euros to professionals in the sector who had filed an interim release, on January 3, to suspend the decree issued by the government on December 31 last.

On January 7, the Constitutional Council also sided with the defenders of the marketing of products containing CBD – the non-psychotropic molecule of cannabis to which relaxing properties are attributed. The Elders had clarified two of the criteria for defining a narcotic product – “risk of addiction” and “harmful health effects” – and considered that CBD-based products, including the flower, did not fall within the scope. scope of this definition.

It’s relatively new in Quebec to hear entrepreneurs talk about their troughs. And as the taboo breaks down, we welcome setbacks with more serenity. For many, the difficult times are part of the road, as much if not more than the successes. After all, almost two-thirds of businesses don’t survive more than 5 years.

Last week, we learned that the co-founders of Frank and Oak, through their investment fund Noble, joined the shareholders of Rose Buddha, a Quebec company renowned for its pretty leggings made from recycled fibers. It is with pride that we announced it, even if in 2020, Ethan Song and Hicham Ratnani, precursors of online commerce in the country, came close to bankruptcy. We are finally in an area where we can recognize the value of entrepreneurs beyond a hiccup.

“All entrepreneurs go through ups and downs,” says Hicham Ratnani. We chose the roller coaster. And if you want to be there, you have to enjoy every moment, in the descents and the ascents. You have to appreciate the race more than the result. »

    Difficult choices

Of course, entrepreneurship will always be a race for success and investors will want returns. But falling doesn’t mean you can’t get up. After a round of financing of $20 million in 2018, in which the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec was very involved, Frank and Oak experienced difficulties with some of its stores; accentuated by the pandemic.

“Every day from March 13, 2020, we had to make difficult choices and work on survival by restructuring before being able to sell to the right partner,” recalls the 37-year-old entrepreneur.

The sale to a US investment fund was not a decision unique to the co-founders. With the other shareholders, it was necessary to find the outcome most favorable to the survival of the company. At the end of 2021, the new owners, with whom Hicham Ratnani has close ties, opened their first store in China.

    The rebound is taking shape.

    Identity

The entrepreneur has no regrets except not having been able to close the chapter by celebrating in person the contribution of the teams, who have built a strong brand. Hicham Ratnani always knew that he would not spend his entire life in the company born in 2012, after two and a half years at stake to find the right vein. Nevertheless, parting with it called into question his personal identity.

“We worked for years putting heart, soul, sweat and blood into it. The company becomes another dimension of myself and I will always have a deep emotional connection with it. Grieving is in the search for the new identity and I’m not sure what it is yet,” he says.

To see clearly, Hicham Ratnani does a lot of sport and surrounds himself with those he loves. He moved temporarily to Berlin with his wife. He meditates, writes a lot and does not hesitate to call on professionals to take care of his body and his head.

Also, he is delighted to see former employees become entrepreneurs, a sign for him of a strong culture.

By creating the Noble Pace fund with his childhood friend Ethan Song, he wants to use the learnings of the last decade to help other social and environmental impact brands in their growth. Rose Buddha is the first. The wish is to help him continue to surprise and charm.
