The protagonist of the series ‘I know who you are’ –3.1 million viewers saw the first episode– admits his debt to the bad boy of Hollywood

Francesc Garrido (Barcelona, 1969) venerates Robert Mitchum. So much so that he confesses to having been inspired by him to give life to his amnesic character of ‘I know who you are’, the black series of Tele 5 which had a great reception last week (3,170,000 viewers). Garrido plays a scheming man who seems to have lost his memory after an accident. He does not remember that he is married, has two children, and owns a law firm. He is accused of the disappearance of his niece, of whom he claims to know nothing. Is your amnesia true? Are we in front of the villain of the story?

Either way, the role of bad guy suits Garrido well. “Playing the villain is more fun”, confesses the actor, who gave us the creeps in the black and splendid film ’25 carats’, where he was engaged in dealing (is a way of saying it) with defaulters. To your movie idol, Mitchum, the bad ones also went to him. In fact, he was the hollywood bad boy (in reality and in fiction). When asked by a journalist why he had decided to star in ‘The night of the hunter’ his response was: “The director called me to propose a script about a real son of a bitch.”

INDIFFERENT TO FAME

The passion for tough and rogue roles is not the only thing that unites Garrido (‘The time between seams’, ‘Isabel’, ‘The adoption’) with its revered Mitchum. The disregard for fame, red carpets and the circus that surrounds the world of cinema also unites them. Have you seen Garrido many times starring in the pink press headlines? What’s more, do you know anything about Garrido that is not strictly professional?

The American claimed not to have seen more than 4 movies in 10 years. The Catalan confesses not to see series

When, in 1993, Mitchum was invited to San Sebastian Festival to receive the Donostia award, asked for an activity plan. The organizers proposed a few official receptions and meetings with the authorities. Completely horrified, Mitchum He replied that he preferred to stay in his quiet ranch without so many tuxedos or ties, he assures Diego Galán (ex-festival director) in the hilarious book of anecdotes about the contest ‘Jack Lemmon never dined here’ (Plaza & Janés). The management corrected and insisted that he would only have to give a press conference and receive the award. Only then did the toughest guy in the movie world accept. He arrived in San Sebastián, but the suitcases were lost on the way. The organization provided him with clothes and when his luggage finally appeared, the actor returned shirts and underwear that he had not used. “This way they will reimburse you for the money in the store,” he assured. Can you be less of a star?

Grünes Blattgemüse – wenig Kohlehydrate, also wenig Zucker

Every year: a detour to Zermatt. Last September we spontaneously went to the for two days Europaweg on the way from Randa via Kinhütte to Zermatt and this year I recently received the following lines: Dear Anita, would you like to take a look at our chalet with four holiday apartments, all with a magnificent view of the Matterhorn? As luck would have it, we actually had a weekend without any fixed plans. With a view to the sunny weather forecast, my decision was made quickly. Sure – we are happy to take a close look at your holiday apartment and take the opportunity to update ourselves on the Zermatt restaurant scene.

Chalet Altesse – holiday apartment with a view of the Matterhorn

That Chalet Altesse is located on the edge of the forest in the quiet Winkelmatten district of Zermatt. The apartments can be reached on foot from the center in about 15 minutes. But do not worry – there is definitely no luggage lugging ahead of you. For guests arriving and departing, a taxi from / to the train station is included in the scope of services. Despite the short notice, the communication between us and Chalet Manager Nikki works smoothly. The taxi is on-time, Nikki welcomes us warmly and accompanies us to our holiday apartment on the second floor.

The Chalet Altesse consists of a total of four holiday apartments; a ground floor apartment, two identical apartments on the 1st and 2nd floor and a beautifully developed attic apartment. There is also a small wellness area in the basement with a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and a relaxation room.

We move into the holiday apartment on the second floor for the weekend, the 170 m2 Living space and is therefore more than twice as large as my comparatively cute Zurich city apartment. 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a spacious kitchen-living room (including a fridge stocked with breakfast essentials) and a sunny balcony with deck chairs and a view of the Matterhorn. Ok – yes, here you can enjoy a holiday with plenty of space and with up to six people.

Since the attic apartment is not yet occupied when we arrive, we can take a look at the «penthouse» after inspecting our apartment. Conclusion: a real gem!

Zermatt Restaurant-Check: Brasserie Uno

If you already have a spacious and well-equipped kitchen at your disposal, you could of course lend a hand yourself. But after last year the Brasserie Uno was already fully booked, this time we got hold of one of the coveted tables. The small, Nordic-inspired, unconventional fine-dining restaurant has a fixed tasting menu on the menu. And at a – in my eyes – unbeatable price. The current summer tasting menu, which consists of 5 courses plus amuse bouche, pre-dessert and friandise, costs 89 CHF. Brasserie Uno owner Andreas Alm and chef Luis Romo as well as their small team do a really good job here!

Via Gornerenschlucht to the Zum See restaurant

Bright sunshine awaits us the next morning. What a lovely late summer day. And definitely too good to only admire the phenomenal panorama from the balcony. The owner family of the Chalet Altesse – the Mennig family – not only rents out holiday apartments, but also runs the well-known restaurant «To the lake». A Zermatt institution that has also been on my culinary Zermatt bucket list for a long time. We combine the restaurant detour with a simple but promising circular hike via Schweigmatte to the glacier garden and from there by means of a suspension bridge over the deep Gornerenschlucht to the hamlet “Zum See”.

The hiking trail conveniently leads uphill directly behind the Chalet Altesse towards the Gornergrat Bahn stop “Findelbach” or is directly connected to the obstacle-free hiking trail no. 256 (Zermatt-Furi). Unfortunately, our route variation is not always suitable for pushchairs. In the first section we follow the obstacle-free hiking trail along the tar road to Schweigmatten. From there it continues uphill on gravel paths to the glacier garden / suspension bridge Gornerenschlucht. A secluded and spacious picnic area is hidden at the branch to the suspension bridge.

Gornerenschlucht suspension bridge

Once the Gornerenschlucht has been crossed, continue via Furi and a path with steps to the hamlet «Zum See». When the weather is nice, the tables in the restaurant of the same name are spread out between the sun-tanned Spycher – a great ambience! And before we try the well-known cream cake, which, as I learned during our visit, has a summer and winter variation, we try two dishes from the seasonal game menu. Delicious! By the way, like almost everywhere in Zermatt, it is advisable to reserve a table in advance.

On the way back from the restaurant Zum See to the Chalet Altesse we come to the entrance to the Gornerenschlucht past. If you feel like it, you can also combine the circular hike over the suspension bridge with a detour into the gorge.

Gornerenschlucht Zermatt

Key data for the Winkelmatten – Glacier Garden – Furi – Zum See hike

The following map shows our route of the easy circular hike from Zermatt Winkelmatten to the glacier garden / suspension bridge Gornerenschlucht and via Furi / Zum See / Blatten back to Winkelmatten. The route measures 7.25 kilometers and includes a moderate gradient of a good 380 meters in altitude. Up to the level of Schweigmatten, the hiking trail runs along a little-traveled tar road. After that it leads mostly over gravel paths (not always suitable for prams or occasionally with stairs).

Zermatt Restaurant-Check: Manud

The rest of the afternoon we enjoy the wonderful weather on «our» balcony. Later we set out again on foot to the center of the village of Zermatt. First we control that Manud at. The Manud is a combination of café / restaurant / bar, with snacks such as plattles, hot dogs, chicken wings and pinsas on the menu. We try our way through two Pinsa creations (the Normalo & the Gardener). The conclusion: both very tasty! And definitely worth a stop.

Zermatt Restaurant-Check: L’Atelier Grandsire

After two shared pinsas, our hunger has not yet been completely erased. Let’s see if we can still get a place in my second preferred candidate for this evening without a reservation. This is what we do! To my surprise, we get a table in the l’Atelier Grandsire. I hadn’t expected that and had already prepared myself to take a selection of the pretty (and very tasty) patisserie “to go” with me and enjoy the dessert back in our apartment. So we unexpectedly get the opportunity to try an extract from the evening menu. This consists of a selection of small plates the size of an appetizer, which you can put together as you wish.

While the patisserie creations are a real stunner, in our opinion the dishes on the evening menu should be a bit more sophisticated in terms of taste – but the potential is definitely there.

Zermatt holiday apartment – practical tips about the Chalet Altesse

  • The holiday apartments in Chalet Altesse can be booked from a stay of three nights in summer and from four (or seven during the high season) nights in winter. The price varies depending on the apartment and season, although there are also seasonal specials. You can find an overview of the prices and special offers here: Packages & offers
  • In addition to the taxi ride to and from Zermatt train station, the included services include breakfast basics on the day of arrival (milk, butter, homemade confiture), coffee capsules and the daily delivery of fresh croissants (or bread, as desired).
  • There is also a ski room (can be used as a bike room in summer).
  • In winter, the Chalet Altesse is right on the ski slopes.
  • Winkelmatten is located a little above the village center of Zermatt, but is well connected via footpaths (and also by means of a bus line).
  • In five minutes walking distance from the Chalet Altesse there is a nice playground (playground Winkelmatten – right next to the chapel “zur heiligen Familie”) as well as the fresh food shop / café “Winkel Kunterbunt” (currently only open in the morning).
  • The inspection of the apartments in Chalet Altesse is already our second holiday apartment check in Zermatt. In 2017 we have the Overlook Lodge presented.

Note: This post was supported by Chalet Altesse. As always, all impressions and opinions are ours.

“Pregnant women are the forgotten people of this crisis”, sighs Chloé Poudens, graphic designer in Bordeaux. At eight months pregnant, the 28-year-old woman considers that not enough is known about the long-term consequences of vaccination against Covid-19 on the health of newborns and has chosen not to not to be vaccinated, even if it means extending his confinement for a few months to avoid risky social contacts. “We were not in clinical trials and yet we are told to get vaccinated”, contests the Bordelaise, whose midwife however warned her, in April: attention to the third trimester, the most subject to complications.

Data has long been patchy concerning pregnant women facing Covid-19, the latter having been sidelined during clinical trials that ultimately led to the approval of the messenger RNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech. “This is not an isolated event, because pregnant women have historically been excluded from the majority of clinical trials, limiting their representation in the development of treatments”, thus regret three American researchers in a text published on October 19 in Science Translational Medicine.

Awareness campaign

Despite this initial shortcoming, since the start of the pandemic, many population studies have been carried out and all converge in the same direction: catching Covid-19 during pregnancy increases the risks of premature birth and admission to intensive care, to for both mother and child. Conversely, among the eleven studies carried out in five different countries including a total of 81,458 vaccinated pregnant women – according to a count by Viki Male, lecturer at Imperial College -, there has never been an increase in false diapers, premature births or birth defects as a result of vaccination.

The risk of complications is so high in late pregnancy that the National Health Service launched an awareness campaign in mid-October aimed at unvaccinated women expecting a child. According to UK data, between July and October 2021, pregnant women represented nearly a third (32%) of women aged 16 to 49 under extracorporeal oxygenation in intensive care, compared to only 6% at the start of the pandemic, in March 2020. This therapy is used in the most severe cases, when a patient’s lungs are so damaged by disease that a ventilator is no longer sufficient to maintain oxygen levels. At the same time, an Israeli study published on October 10 in The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, showed that pregnant women with Covid-19 are more likely to suffer from gestational diabetes, low white blood cell counts and heavier breathing during and after birth. The disease can also increase the risk for newborns of breathing problems.

One month after turning 80, Robert Mitchum He died in his sleep at his residence in Santa Bárbara (California). Lung cancer took one of the best-known and most disturbing faces on the big screen. The actor stayed on the crest of the wave for more than fifty years and his name will always be linked to characters with a reputation for tough, cynical and rebellious, but he also embodied war heroes and tormented types with conviction.

Despite starring in more than a hundred films and television films, the Oscar resisted him. Among his list of awards are the Cecil B. DeMille in 1992 for his entire artistic career and the Donostia that was presented to him at the San Sebastian Festival in 1993. But Mitchum also cultivated other more unknown facets, such as that of a poet, composer or singer.

Born on August 6, 1917 in Bridgeport, Connecticut (USA), he spent most of his childhood and adolescence involved in fights and mischief. His father, who worked on the railroads, was killed in a tragic accident crushed between two carriages when Robert was only two years old. His mother, of Norwegian descent, was a great fan of reading who encouraged him to write poems and drawings, so the future actor developed a sensitive facet that remained hidden behind his apparent air of disinterest. Being a widow and with three dependent children, the matriarch sent Robert to live on the grandparents’ farm in Delaware at the age of twelve. There he was expelled from high school for beating the principal.

Since his family was not rich in money, he decided to go independent at 16 and see what he could achieve for himself. He set out for the West Coast and crossed the country by train like a bum. In fact, he was arrested in Georgia for loitering and was sentenced to 30 days of forced labor. As a teenager he worked a bit of everything: boxer, miner, nightclub doorman. It is said that a boxing match caused an injury that left him with his characteristic sad and semi-sleepy look.

As a young man, he was arrested for loitering and sentenced to 30 days of forced labor.

Your craving for adventure They took him to California to meet girls. Following the advice of his sister, he began to collaborate in a theater company and wrote some children’s plays and stories. In 1940 he married Dorothy Spence, his lifelong girlfriend, with whom he had three children. At that time, he needed a stable job and found a job in an aeronautical company, but he felt so bad that he soon fell ill. His next job was as a clerk in a shoe store and in that place his destiny would change forever after meeting the producer Bob Sherman.

He began to work as a specialist in the cinema. He rode well on horseback but never thought he would become a professional actor. In 1943 he appeared in a total of 19 films, most westerns, and then jumped to bigger roles such as in 30 seconds over Tokyo (1944), by Mervyn LeRoy, with Spencer Tracy. His consecration would come with the war drama We are also human beings (1945), by William A. Wellman, for which he was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best supporting actor.

It was the first time he had found something that interested him, although for him being an actor was just another job. Mitchum ended up being pigeonholed into film noir roles with a apparent inexpressiveness which helped him specialize in taciturn and laconic characters. Fame was not with him and according to the director said Sydney Pollack, who directed it in Yakuza (1974), “somehow he was ashamed of being an actor”, because he found all the attention it generated a bit embarrassing.

He liked spending free time with his friends and drinking. He used to party until dawn with Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles and John Wayne. He wanted to be a normal man and do whatever he wanted, but Hollywood was not the ideal place to unleash his pleasures without constant scrutiny. Thus, he was carving an image of ‘bad boy’ that accompanied him all his life. He started making money and his manager scammed him, leaving the family bankrupt. On August 31, 1948 a scandal staggered his career, as he was stopped at a party for possession of marijuana and spent two almost two months in jail. Mitchum always claimed that he had been set up.

His undeniable charm was overshadowed so much by this sordid affair that it removed him from the lists of candidates for the golden statuette of the Hollywood Academy, as was his addiction to drinking. However, he had the support of the tycoon Howard Hugues, which controlled part of the RKO company.

During the 1950s and 1960s he continued to make his mark on the seventh art. On River of no return (1954) acted alongside Marilyn Monroe and performed the main theme song. One of his most recognized roles was as a preacher of murderous instincts in Hunter’s night (1955), which was a commercial failure. He made four films with Deborah Kerr, including God only knows (1957) under the command of John Huston, with whom he struck up a great friendship.

Gregory Peck convinced him to play the criminal in Cape of Terror (1962) and three decades later he participated in the remake directed by Martin Scorsese. Along with Shirley McLaine he co-starred Any day on any corner (1962) and Her and her husbands (1964), in addition to entering into a loving relationship that was about to say goodbye to their marriage. However, Dorothy remained by his side until the end. The actresses he worked with adored him: Jane Russell, Deborah Kerr or Joan Collins spoke highly of this man who detested the falsehood that reigned in the industry and who liked to tell spicy jokes and tell stories without looking at his watch.

Another of his most memorable roles was as a widowed teacher in Ryan’s daughter (1970), by David Lean. At the beginning of the seventies he began to lose interest in the cinema until the character of Philip Marlowe, the detective in the Raymond Chandler novels immortalized by Humphrey Bogart. Mitchum endowed his character with authenticity and charisma as peculiar as Bogie in Bye doll (1975) and Private detective (1978). In the latter he acted alongside James Stewart, who curiously passed away a day after Mitchum.

In 1983, at the age of 66, he appeared in the miniseries Winds of war, where his problem with alcohol became evident. He drank while he worked and did not remember his texts. She went into the Betty Ford Center to detox. The tobacco it also did not help improve his delicate health. He had emphysema and became dependent on oxygen; he still continued to smoke.

We could see him in the series North and south and one of his last jobs was in the western Dead Man (1995), by Jim Jarmusch. After the tough-guy appearance, Mitchum was a sensitive man who drowned his insecurity in gallons of alcohol and bragged about not being in the Hollywood game. “I have never changed, except for socks and underwear. And I never did anything to glorify myself or improve my luck. I took what came and did the best I could with it. “

18.07 Uhr – Biontech will Produktionsstätte für Impfstoffe in Afrika bauen

17.58 Uhr – Kinderschutzbund: Pandemie verschärft Lage sozial schwacher Familien

The research, led by the University of Plymouth and published in The Lancet, has shown that antidepressant mirtazapine offered no improvement in agitation for people with dementia — and was possibly more likely to be associated with mortality than no intervention at all.

Agitation is a common symptom of dementia, characterised by inappropriate verbal, vocal or motor activity, and often involves physical and verbal aggression. Non-drug patient-centred care is the first intervention that should be offered but, when this doesn’t work, clinicians may move to a drug-based alternative. Antipsychotics have proven to increase death rates in those with dementia, along with other poor outcomes, and so mirtazapine has been routinely prescribed. This study was designed to add to the evidence base around its effectiveness.

Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the study recruited 204 people with probable or possible Alzheimer’s disease from 20 sites around the UK, allocating half to mirtazapine and half to placebo. The trial was double-blind; meaning that neither the researcher nor the study participants knew what they were taking.

The results showed that there was no less agitation after 12 weeks in the mirtazapine group than in the control group. There were also more deaths in the mirtazapine group (seven) by week 16 than in the control group (only one), with analysis suggesting this was of marginal statistical significance.

Lead researcher Professor Sube Banerjee, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Professor in Dementia at the University of Plymouth, explained why the results were so surprising, but important.

“Dementia affects 46 million people worldwide — a figure set to double over the next 20 years. Poor life quality is driven by problems like agitation and we need to find ways to help those affected,” he said.

“This study shows that a common way of managing symptoms is not helpful — and could even be detrimental. It’s really important that these results are taken into account and mirtazapine is no longer used to treat agitation in people with dementia.

“This study has added important information to the evidence base, and we look forward to investigating further treatments that may help to improve people’s quality of life.”

A fantastic circus world with elephants, tigers or clowns as well as a giant pyramid await you at the Krewelshof Eifel, built from over 100,000 pumpkins. It is the largest pumpkin exhibition in North Rhine-Westphalia. You can experience the Pumpkin Festival 2021 with this year’s circus motto until November 6th. We went on a trip with dog Buddy to the pumpkin farm in Mechernich. I’ll show you my most beautiful pictures and give you practical tips.

Pumpkin exhibition in NRW – great destination!

Not far from Aachen, Cologne and Bonn is the Krewelshof Eifel in Mechernich.

The popular destination can be visited 365 days a year. The opening times of the largest pumpkin exhibition in North Rhine-Westphalia are daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the site closes at 6.30 p.m.

Admission is 6 euros per person, breakfast guests only pay 3 euros. The parent-child card costs 17 euros for two adults and two to three children. Groups of 20 people or more pay EUR 4.50 per person.

Pumpkin FestivalWe were there on Sunday, September 5th, 2021. It was the first day of the pumpkin show. Probably because of this, the free parking lot was almost completely full. But on the large courtyard, the visitors were well distributed: inside.

We first had a leisurely breakfast outside in the courtyard café in bright sunshine. Then we went to the pumpkin festival. Then I went shopping in the farm shop.

YouTube video from the pumpkin farm

I also shot a short YouTube video at the pumpkin farm. It gives you a first glimpse into the Pumpkin Festival 2021:

Pumpkin Festival 2021 at the Krewelshof Eifel

Pumpkin exhibitionYou can see pumpkins in all sizes, colors and shapes at NRW’s largest pumpkin show. This takes place every year at the Krewelshof Eifel.

Pumpkin exhibitionOver 100,000 pumpkins were arranged around the small Krewelshofer See this year. 20 people worked on it for two weeks.

Pumpkin FestivalYou can walk on the circular path, the wood path is lined with pumpkins. We were here for around an hour, also because I kept finding beautiful photo opportunities. I was amazed at how lovingly and detailed everything was designed.

Pumpkin exhibition EifelI really liked this year’s theme of circus nostalgia, with figures up to five meters high. “Pumpkin circus – open the arena,” it said.

Pumpkins exhibitionThe pumpkin figures showed, for example, an artist’s pyramid, a circus horse or clowns.

Pumpkin Pyramide in NRWA popular Instagram spot in autumn is the giant pumpkin pyramid. The “Pumpkin Pyramid” with the pumpkins in orange, white or green is really great!

Corn maze, pumpkin carving and photo spots

Other offers are about that Maize Labyrinth, a bouncy hill or the straw slide.

the Pumpkin carving workshop is open from 3 p.m. on weekends in September and October.

On October 30th and 31st, 2021 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. NRW’s largest pumpkin carving street. Here you can – if you wish, with guidance – carve your own pumpkin, e.g. B. to the lantern or the creepy Halloween face. Registration is not required.

I also found the oversized sofa and the hay cart at the entrance very nice, where you each other taking photos can.

Nice trip with dog in autumn

Excursion with dogDogs are welcome on the farm. However, they should be on a leash and tolerable. We saw some other fur noses, Buddy was allowed to sniff a few of them.

It was 23 degrees, almost too hot for our Magyar Vizsla (Hungarian hunting dog). We had taken water with us, it quenched our greatest thirst.

There was enough space both in the café and at the exhibition with the pumpkins. Buddy can get excited when there are many people around him. But so he stayed relaxed.

Cozy breakfast in the courtyard café

In the Hofcafé there will be a breakfast buffet offered from 9 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.

The prices for the breakfast buffet vary: on weekends and on public holidays, breakfast costs 19.50 euros. During the week you pay 14.50 euros.

At 9.30 a.m. it was very full at the buffet, and it wasn’t really something for me as a vegan. Instead of the buffet, Carsten only took a coffee and a croissant, so he sat down at a table outside. Meanwhile, I looked around for photo spots.

To the Having lunch Incidentally, pumpkin cream soup or lasagna (vegetarian) are offered. And in the afternoon there is coffee and cake. How about a pumpkin muffin or cake?

Pumpkins everywhere on the adventure farm

Buying pumpkins in the EifelIn addition to the pumpkin show, we also saw numerous pumpkins in the courtyard. You can buy many different varieties, all of which are edible. You can use it to cook or bake. There were recipe ideas on the boxes, e.g. B. for pumpkin salad, schnitzel or dessert.

Or would you like to carve pumpkins at home for Halloween? You can also buy the large carved pumpkins. I like pumpkins as autumn decorations and thought the little white “Baby Boo” or the “Black Cat” were pretty.

Shopping in the farm shop

Seasonal and regional products such as asparagus, strawberries, cherries, plums, apples, pears, pumpkins or Christmas trees are available here – depending on the season. The Hofmarkt is huge.

You will receive pumpkin spritzer, pumpkin secco and pumpkin soup to go with the exhibition. Or how about the cookbook “Pumpkin Enjoyment”?

Rules in times of Corona

As of October 8, 2021 (see Facebook site of the Krewelshof) 3G was only necessary for indoor catering. Visitors had to be vaccinated, recovered or tested. This was not necessary for the pumpkin show and the outdoor areas of the café.

It was compulsory to wear masks on the entire site, except at the tables. It was asked to keep your distance.

Dusty Baker still has the pictures clearly in mind. Of course he still has it in mind. How could he ever forget her? No one who was at the Anaheim stadium or in front of the television sets on October 26, 2002 has forgotten them. Not even 19 years later. It’s the sixth game of the World Series between San Francisco Giants and the Anaheim Angels. The Giants trained by Baker lead the final series with 3-2 victories. All they have to do is win one game to be champions again for the first time since 1954, when they were still based in New York.

And they are in the seventh Inning 5-0 up front. In the catacombs, the league officials have already brought the champions trophy into the Giants cabin. Outside, on the field, Baker goes to his Starting Pitcher Russ Ortiz. He threw 98 balls – so cleverly that the Angels players hardly had a chance to hit them properly.

But now two of them stand on the First and Second Base. “We were hoping Russ would finish the seventh inning, but then I decided to take him out”, said Baker.

Baker’s unhappy hand when changing

Before going to Ortiz direction Dugout Baker puts the ball into his hand. “As a reward and my appreciation for his performance”he explains. And which Pitcher doesn’t like having the baseball of the master game in your home showcase? Baker replaces Ortiz with Felix Rodriguez. It’s the beginning of the end of the Giants’ title dream.

Rodriguez’s first opponent, Scott Spiezio, hits a three-Run-Homerun – the Angels shorten it to 3: 5. Baker immediately suspects that this could be the moment that turns the final series, as he later said in a documentary by “MLB Network“emphasizes. And his feeling becomes reality. Anaheim not only wins game six 6: 5, but a day later also the all-important seventh game (4: 1) and becomes champions for the first time.

Successful, untitled trainer

Dusty Baker has now become one of the most successful in his industry. He was coach of the year three times. He is the only one who has five different clubs – after the Giants, the ones Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and now Houston Astros – led to the playoffs.

However, he also holds a record that he is not so proud of. No other coach the MLB-History has won as many games (1987) as he does – and is still without a title. He had to wait 19 years for a second chance. Now he has it, finally. Ironically on October 26th.

Baker is already 72 years old, but “a cool 72 year old”, that’s how he sees it himself. And that he is now back in the World Series, he owes special circumstances. On January 13, 2020, Astros became AJ Hinch Banned from the league for one year and then immediately dismissed from the club.

An MLB investigation had revealed that the Astros had cheated on their 2017 title win. They illegally recorded the signals with which the opposing catcher tells his pitcher which throw he would like to have and passed this information on to their own batsman by knocking on a garbage can standing next to the substitute bench. So he knew whether a ball that was thrown hard or a ball that was spinning away was coming at him.

Lightning Rod Baker

The scandal was great, the reputation of the Texans was ruined to a great extent. So they looked for a trainer with charisma. One who directs the focus back to the sporty or on himself and thus brings the scolded players out of the line of fire. A kind of lightning rod. They found him in Dusty Baker. “He’s a leader and a friend, a wise man who’s been through everything in baseball”, says Shortstop Carlos Correa.

Baker had made a number of missteps in the past. In 2003 he claimed that “Blacks and Latinos play better than most whites in the heat” and whites, on the other hand, could cope better with the cold. He wants “Don’t play the race card”, but simply gave facts, he emphasized when asked by the “USA Today“Back then. Baker was one of four African American head coaches in the league at the time.

Statements “unhappy and not fully informed”

His statements raised some frowns and raised the question of what if a white coach had said something like that? Sports psychologist Harry Edwards of the University of California Berkeley ranked them as “Unhappy and not fully informed” one, but at the same time stressed that they “not malicious” be. As a trainer of the Washington Nationals Baker said in 2015 that the “Use of Latinos and African Americans” one “better chance” have, “some speed into play” to get. It’s just like that, added Baker. And no, he’s not a racist.

Baker – a nice, personable buddy?

Nevertheless, the Californian has the reputation of being a nice, personable and always smiling friend across the country and in the league. “CBS Sports“refers to him as “lovable coach of the hated astros”. The “New York Times“writes: “A polarizing team with a coach who is worth cheering on.” Und J.T. Snow, First Baseman the Almost Master Giants of 2002, would “Like to see Dusty win.”

This support would of course not be necessary if Baker’s team had not given up the clear leadership at the time and thus gambled away the title. But this chapter is an integral part of Baker’s coaching career. Had he left Russ Ortiz in the game or maybe someone else Relief Pitcher than Felix should bring Rodriguez?

Baker heard these questions many times and always gave the same answer. “I regret very few things from the past. Because you have to learn from mistakes.” Dusty Baker can now show whether he has learned. 19 years later. He deserved this chance.

The Oscar-winning British actor Anthony Hopkins returns to the cinema with ‘The father’, a film about the loss of memory in old age.

Dementia is a syndrome that involves impaired memory, intellect, behavior, and the ability to perform activities of daily living. According to the World Health Organization, it is not an inevitable consequence of aging, but the number of people with dementia is increasing rapidly around the world (about 50 million people suffer from it).

In this regard, it is on this subject that the French filmmaker Florian Zeller used to offer The father (The Father). The film stars Anthony Hopkins, who plays an aging Welshman who begins to lose his memory. When his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman) moves in to help him, he is forced to deal with her loosening of reality, as she begins to mourn the loss of her father as she once knew him. ANDIt’s a tough subject, yes, but for his debut feature, the director used stories about the aging mind, as they have gained popularity as the population lives longer lives, But what Zeller is trying to do is show the difficulties from the patient’s point of view, rather than the usual advantage of saddened loved ones.

The film was nominated for four Golden Globes, including best actor for Hopkins. In a year full of titanic male performances (Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Riz Ahmed), the octogenarian British actor stands out for his seismic turn in this role whose character bears the same name: Anthony.

The drama begins when Anthony receives a visit from his daughter and admits that he plans to move from London to Paris to live with a new boyfriend. And obviously, his father is distressed. It’s when the movie begins to take turns because what Anthony begins to see is not what happens. Details, names, and faces blur a bit more each time a character takes another direction before the veteran’s eyes. It sounds somewhat theatrical, but it is because the script is based on a play. Frank Langella won a Tony Award in 2016 for playing the title character on Broadway.

“What I wanted to do was not tell the story from the outside, but from the inside, and put the audience in an active position, as if it were in the head of the main character. Wanted to The father it was a bit more than a story, but as an experience, as if you (the viewer) were the one who lost his way ”, explains Zeller to Variety.

Zeller wrote for the first time The father a decade ago as a libretto titled The father, and written in French, her first language, it premiered in 2012 in Paris. It was praised by critics, filled with awards, and was eventually performed in 45 countries. “Of course, the first thoughts and advice you get when adapting a play to a movie is to try to write new scenes outdoors, to make it feel more cinematic. And that’s a temptation, and generally what you do, ”says Zeller, who was inspired by her grandmother, a person who began to experience dementia. “It was a painful process, suddenly becoming powerless. You can love someone and you discover that love is not enough ”.

The actor

Owen Gleiberman, de Variety, said: “Hopkins is absolutely stunning. Act, for a time, with a grayish charm and a roaring certainty… It is a cosmic confusion mixed with terror. Anthony is losing more than his memory, he is losing himself. “

“Now I am 83 years old, so I am at that dangerous age. It felt like second nature. I don’t know why, maybe because I’ve been in acting for a long time. It was such a wonderful part to play, but it was so easy because I guess I’m closer to that now. It was so powerful and so simple, so direct, so concise, so compact. I’ve been lucky, in the last few years I’ve been involved in some wonderful movies, but this was really unique, “Hopkins told deadline.com.

The actor’s extraordinary six-decade career has been marked by his ability to be great and terrifying without being physically imposing. Hopkins has been brilliant playing real men like Richard Nixon, Alfred Hitchcock, Pablo Picasso, CS Lewis, and Pope Benedict XVI. “It sounds very corny, but it has made me very aware now of how precious life is and how we hold ourselves inside something so mysterious,” says Hopkins in Variety. “For me, life is just a kind of dream. It is an illusion that has me aware of something else. That life is much more powerful than we begin to understand. There is something so deep within us that we don’t even begin to understand. “

The father It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival the previous January and since then Hopkins’ performance has been highlighted by critics, who hope that the role of the veteran with dementia will lead him again to fight for an Oscar, which has eluded him. since he won it for The silence of the inocents (1991). His character of The father He’s very confused, but Hopkins said the actor wasn’t (laughs), as he commented that playing that confusion was a pleasure. “The script was so engaging, so magnetic, condensed, to the point… I couldn’t believe my luck at my age to be offered that. And when Olivia was chosen, I thought: What more do I want? The Wrap.

It is worth remembering that the actor suffers from alcoholism. In December 2020, Anthony Hopkins posted a video on Twitter to commemorate 45 years of being sober. “It has been a hard year full of pain and sadness for many, many, many people, but today 45 years ago I had a wake-up call. I was heading for disaster, I was drinking myself to death ”.

About his illness, The Sunday Times did an interview with him in which he talks about that past. “Looking back, I am not proud of myself because I caused a lot of damage. It’s deadly to be around drunkards and I was one of those. But even if I didn’t want to repeat those years, because I hurt people, anxiety and anger were a driving force in my life ”, recalled the actor, who also suffers from dyslexia.

Hopkins doesn’t stop. Soon we will see him again in the movies The Virtuoso, Zero Contact and Elyse, the latter directed by his wife, Stella Hopkins, in her film debut. In this thriller psychological that focuses on the life of a woman with mental disorders, apart from acting, Anthony Hopkins is also the creator of the soundtrack.
