Avant Arte open their first exhibition in Amsterdam with longtime collaborator, Paul Insect. The exhibition of original paintings and sculptures will be accompanied by a pair of exclusive print editions and an unprecedented view of the elusive artist’s practice.

The exhibition takes place on Lauriergracht, a street with a rich history for both artists and collectors – from Rembrant’s protégé Govaert Flink to noted impressionist George Hendrik Breitner.
‘Personal Effects’ gathers the results of more than a year lived between novel circumstance and old routine and attests to the self-sustained appetite for experiment found in the studio of an art world maverick. New paintings and sculptures, realised in a dizzying array of forms, techniques and materials, will appear alongside their associated effects, effects which – from jig dolls to polaroid frames – act as both reference and document.
“I’ve worked with Avant Arte for some years now, and the collaborations have always allowed me the freedom to express alternative ideas – from working with master printmakers and glass foundries to dressing up as a puppet and doing a live giveaway on Instagram. We’ve always talked about doing a show, and I suppose lockdown presented that opportunity. I’m looking forward to being back in Amsterdam too, it’s been 32 years!
Not a lot changed for me working during the pandemic, other than the phone not ringing all the time. I work alone in my studio, always have done, and continued to do so through lockdown. ‘Personal Effects’ is a culmination of work from that quiet time. A series of polaroids document the making of various works – large paintings, sculptures and videos. I’ve always seen myself as a multidisciplinary artist, I enjoy working with all forms and materials, collaging them like ideas, and this show touches on some of those interests.”

The exhibition includes 27 paintings and 15 sculptures alongside a collection of collages, drawings, photographs and multi-media assemblages. The divisions between each aforementioned category are wilfully blurred. A full list of featured works is available on request

About the artist
Paul Insect, also known as PINS, was born in 1971 in the south east of England. He now lives and works in London. He has collaborated with street art stablemates Banksy and Bast, produced album art for DJ Shadow and received commissions from festivals including Glastonbury and The Lost Horizon. In 2007, Damien Hirst bought the entirety of Bullion, Insect’s solo show at London’s Lazarides Gallery, before it even opened. The artist simultaneously hides and reveals his subjects across paint, print, collage and sculpture, muddling portraiture and abstraction in multi-media works where hyper-real faces are masked by splashes of colour and bold geometries. The compositions evoke both Dada and Pop Art, and make clear nods to Insect’s roots as a graffiti artist. Exploring conflicting desires to shroud and to share, Insect’s work interrogates the rift between who we are, and who we choose to be. @paulinsect

Tropical cyclones, regionally known as hurricanes or typhoons, have been moving across ocean basins faster since 1982, according to a new study published in Environmental Research Letters.
The study, led by Sung-Hun Kim, a post-doctoral researcher in the University of Hawai’i at Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the time of the work, also determined the North Atlantic region has experienced an increase in the frequency of hurricanes and that tropical cyclone activity has shifted toward the poles in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
The researchers, including Pao-Shin Chu, atmospheric sciences professor in SOEST, focused on tropical cyclones since 1982, when modern, reliable satellite data became available. They assessed the frequency and locations of storms and trends in tropical cyclone movement speed — how quickly a storm moves forward — globally and regionally in each ocean basin.
“For people in Hawai’i, the threat of hurricanes is always there every year,” said Chu. “If hurricanes move faster they would pose danger to coastal communities and emergency managers because they would have less time to prepare for evacuation and other measures.”
The recent study suggests the reason for the observed changes is a combination of natural variations and human-induced climate change.
The researchers continue the study the trends in and connections between climate variability and tropical cyclone activity.

El disidente cubano Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara
El Gobierno de Estados Unidos exigió este miércoles la liberación inmediata del artista y disidente cubano Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, que denunció se encuentra incomunicado y sin acceso a su abogado desde el pasado 18 de enero.
“El régimen cubano mantiene al activista y disidente Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara incomunicado”, escribió en Twitter la administradora de la Agencia de Cooperación para el Desarrollo de Estados Unidos (Usaid, en inglés), Samantha Power, quien apuntó que su familia desconoce el estado de salud en que se encuentra el artista.
“Urgimos a nuestros socios internacionales a unirse a nosotros en la exigencia de liberación inmediata de Alcántara”, añadió.
Otero, en la cárcel desde las protestas antigubernamentales del 11 de julio, inició en enero una huelga de hambre y sed, informaron en redes sociales distintos activistas.

El activista considera que las autoridades cubanas le están “guardando como moneda de cambio” y buscar el momento adecuado para excarcelarlo si abandona el país, algo a lo que él no se quiere prestar.
El disidente tomó esta decisión poco después de que la fiscalía rechazase su petición de cambio de la medida cautelar que pesa sobre él para quedar en libertad a la espera de su juicio, tras más de seis meses en prisión preventiva.
Otero está preso en la cárcel de Guanajay (occidente) desde el pasado 11 de julio, cuando trató de sumarse a las espontáneas protestas antigubernamentales, las mayores en décadas, aunque ya antes se había significado políticamente en el Movimiento San Isidro.
El disidente participó asimismo en el tema “Patria y vida”, crítico con el Gobierno cubano y que se convirtió en grito de la oposición y lema de las protestas del 11 de julio.
Se le acusa de los presuntos delitos de desacato, desorden público, instigación a delinquir y de ultraje a los símbolos patrios. Human Rights Watch considera que estos cargos son injustos o infundados.

Este miércoles el Grupo de Trabajo sobre la Detención Arbitraria de Naciones Unidas (ONU) exigió la liberación del rapero y disidente cubano Maykel Castillo, “el Osorbo”, cointérprete del videoclip viral Patria y Vida, que se encuentra en una prisión cubana desde el pasado mes de mayo.
Según difundió este miércoles la ONG Prisoners Defenders, el grupo de trabajo de la ONU le remitió recientemente un informe en el que concluye que la detención de Castillo es “arbitraria”.
“El Grupo de Trabajo considera que, teniendo en cuenta todas las circunstancias del caso, el remedio adecuado sería poner al señor Castillo Pérez inmediatamente en libertad y concederle el derecho efectivo a obtener una indemnización y otros tipos de reparación”, afirma el documento.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. With Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch’s hilarious impressions of each other, flattery must go off the charts. The Doctor Strange actor recalled meeting Holland for the first time at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere. He gave a hilarious imitation of the Spider-Man actor, but then Tom Holland got his chance to do an impression of Benedict Cumberbatch.

Benedict Cumberbatch did an impression of Tom Holland at the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ premiere
Jacob Batalon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya arrived at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere and snapped some pictures with the star of Doctor Strange and Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch.
“It’s crazy to be on set with [actors] this young, this talented, and this generous and kind, and every day is a very lively, lovely, energized and focused and brilliant to watch day,” Cumberbatch said about Holland to ET. “We know each other well, we’re two Brits who are having the rides of our lives, and it’s fun to share a little bit of it with him. I’m really proud of him.”
The future Doctor Strange 2 star recalled when they met with a hilarious impression of the Spider-Man cast lead.
“He’s younger than me, like I said before, to get to see him, and the first moment [I met him], I remember him bounding across the concrete at Longcross, we had to shoot a lot of Marvel stuff in England, and he went “‘Ello, I’m Tom, I’ve just been cast to do Spider-Man!’ and I was like ‘Wow, congratulations, that’s amazing!’”
And Cumberbatch has been pushed to do impressions of Holland in more interviews for Spider-Man: No Way Home and even for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Holland finally got his chance to retaliate.

After discussing a possible cameo with Zendaya on Euphoria, the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show host said that Cumberbatch does an incredible impression of Him. She wanted to know if Tom Holland could do an impression of Benedict Cumberbatch around the
“Uh, okay, Benedict Cumberbatch,” Holland prepared himself. “‘Oh Tom, darling, would you like to run the lines before we start shooting, darling?’”
Holland did his best to lower his voice and capture the charm that comes from the Sherlock star. The host laughed, calling the impression of the Sorcerer Supreme actor ‘spot on.’

Now someone needs to ask Andrew Garfield to do an impression of his Spider-Man: No Way Home co-stars. Then the trifecta of British actors impersonating each other will be complete.

Jacob Batalon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya arrived at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere and snapped some pictures with the star of Doctor Strange and Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch.
“It’s crazy to be on set with [actors] this young, this talented, and this generous and kind, and every day is a very lively, lovely, energized and focused and brilliant to watch day,” Cumberbatch said about Holland to ET. “We know each other well, we’re two Brits who are having the rides of our lives, and it’s fun to share a little bit of it with him. I’m really proud of him.”
The future Doctor Strange 2 star recalled when they met with a hilarious impression of the Spider-Man cast lead.
“He’s younger than me, like I said before, to get to see him, and the first moment [I met him], I remember him bounding across the concrete at Longcross, we had to shoot a lot of Marvel stuff in England, and he went “‘Ello, I’m Tom, I’ve just been cast to do Spider-Man!’ and I was like ‘Wow, congratulations, that’s amazing!’”
And Cumberbatch has been pushed to do impressions of Holland in more interviews for Spider-Man: No Way Home and even for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Holland finally got his chance to retaliate.

After discussing a possible cameo with Zendaya on Euphoria, the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show host said that Cumberbatch does an incredible impression of Him. She wanted to know if Tom Holland could do an impression of Benedict Cumberbatch around the
“Uh, okay, Benedict Cumberbatch,” Holland prepared himself. “‘Oh Tom, darling, would you like to run the lines before we start shooting, darling?’”
Holland did his best to lower his voice and capture the charm that comes from the Sherlock star. The host laughed, calling the impression of the Sorcerer Supreme actor ‘spot on.’

(Enthält Werbung) Ein Städtetrip mit Hund? In Frankfurt am Main mit seinen vielen Grünflächen klappte das super. Im August 2021 besuchten wir an einem Wochenende Frankfurt mit Hund. Im Biohotel Villa Orange probierten wir das Hunde-Kultur-Package samt Stadtführung aus. In diesem Artikel erzähle ich euch davon und verrate meine Tipps für hundefreundliche Ausflugsziele und Sehenswürdigkeiten, Hundewiesen, Restaurants und Cafés.
Ein schönes Wochenende in Frankfurt mit Hund
Auch wenn ihr bei Frankfurt zuerst an die Skyline mit hohen Wolkenkratzern denkt, hat „Mainhattan“ auch eine grüne Seite. Der Grüngürtel allein nimmt rund ein Drittel der Stadtfläche ein.
Wir freuten uns sehr über die vielen Hundewiesen, auf denen die Vierbeiner ohne Leine laufen dürfen. Die beiden Auslaufflächen, die wir besuchten, boten reichlich Platz und nette Hundebegegnungen.
Klassische Sehenswürdigkeiten in Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt habe ich schon früh kennengelernt. Denn mehrere Freunde und Freundinnen leben in der Mainmetropole. Wir haben hier eine Studienfreundin besucht, waren auf Sixtiespartys oder in Kunstausstellungen.
Bekannte Sehenswürdigkeiten wie den Römer (Rathaus auf dem Foto), die Fachwerkhäuser am Römerberg (Rathausplatz), die Einkaufsstraßen Zeil und Berger Straße, die Kleinmarkthalle mit Essensständen oder die Apfelweinlokale in Sachsenhausen kannten wir daher schon.
Entspannter Kurzurlaub mit unserer Fellnase
Jetzt gingen wir erstmals mit Buddy auf Entdeckungstour. Mit unserem quirligen, großen Jagdhund – einem ungarischen Magyar Vizsla – haben wir schon viele Reisen unternommen. Im Auto sind wir in Deutschland und Europa unterwegs.
Wir wohnen ja selbst in einer Großstadt, den Trubel kennt er also schon. Aber er braucht auch viel Bewegung im Grünen. Und genügend Ruhe, um zu schlafen und zu kuscheln. So wurde es für uns alle ein schöner Urlaub mit Hund.
Hundefreundliches Hotel Villa Orange
Ich bin ein großer Fan von Biohotels. Die Villa Orange ist Frankfurts einziges Biohotel. Klimaneutral, mit natürlichen Materialien ausgestattet, Naturpflegeprodukten und Bioessen (mit veganen und vegetarischen Optionen).
Das charmante Boutiquehotel zählt 38 Zimmer und liegt zentral im Nordend (Hebelstraße 1).
Hunde-Kultur-Package
Hier testeten wir das Hunde-Kultur-Package, das im Sommer 2020 eingeführt wurde. Es umfasst:
2 Übernachtungen mit Frühstück
Hundebett, Näpfe und Begrüßungsleckerli
Frankfurt Card für einen Tag mit kostenlosem Nahverkehr und Vergünstigungen bei vielen Museen und Einrichtungen
1 x Stadtführung mit der Stadtführerei (rund 1,5 Stunden)
Für Hunde zahlt ihr bei normalen Übernachtungen übrigens 15 Euro Aufschlag pro Tag.
Hotelhund Daisy
Hotelchefin Christiane Hütte hat selbst Labradoodle Daisy an ihrer Seite. Wuschel trifft Zimtnase – bei ihrer ersten Begegnung mochten sich Daisy und Buddy auf Anhieb.
Wie Christiane erzählte, ist Daisy sehr umgänglich und begrüßt vierbeinige Hotelgäste immer gerne. Gemeinsam gingen wir später auf die Stadtführung, das klappte prima.
Relaxen in der Bibliothek oder auf der Terrasse
Mein Lieblingsraum im schön eingerichteten Hotel war die Bibliothek. Auf dem gemütlichen Sofa oder den Sesseln konnten wir lesen und gemeinsam mit Buddy entspannen.
Oder wie wäre es mit einem Kaffee auf der Terrasse?
Zimmer mit Himmelbett, Büchern und Balkon
Wir relaxten auch auf dem Balkon unseres Hotelzimmers im 3. Stock (es gab einen Aufzug).
Hier schliefen wir sehr gut im Himmelbett mit orangefarbenem Baldachin. Für zwischendurch lagen Bücher, leckere Teesorten und kleine Schokoladentäfelchen bereit. Ganz nach meinem Geschmack!
Auch mochte ich das große Badezimmer sehr, mit schwarz-weißen Fliesen und einer Badewanne.
Frühstück mit veganen Optionen
Im Hotel wird nur Frühstück angeboten, außer für Tagungen oder Feiern. Doch das passte gut für uns, da wir gerne Cafés und Restaurants ausprobieren. Wenn morgens nicht viel los ist, könnt ihr euren Hund zum Frühstück mitnehmen.
Die netten Hotelmitarbeiter:innen helfen bei Essenswünschen gerne weiter. Auf dem reichhaltigen Frühstücksbuffet fand ich als Veganerin einiges, was rein pflanzlich war.
Darunter herzhafte und süße Aufstriche, Aufschnitt, Kokosjoghurt oder Pflanzenmilch für meinen Kaffee. Ich griff auch bei Tomaten, Gurken, Oliven und dem Obstsalat zu. Eine tolle Auswahl, die ich so in noch nicht vielen Hotels gesehen habe.
Hundefreundliche Restaurants in der Nähe
Mittagessen und Abendessen gab es für uns in der Stadt. Das Restaurant Portofino (Scheffelstraße 28) liegt etwa nur wenige Schritte entfernt.
Hundesitterin auf Anfrage
Auch ist eine Hundesitterin verfügbar, inclusive Abhol- und Bringservice. Da in Frankfurt viele Restaurants hundefreundlich sind, kam Buddy einfach mit. Die Hundebetreuung ist aber auf jeden Fall eine tolle Option, falls ihr mal ohne Hund shoppen, ins Museum oder in den Club möchtet!
Gassigehen im Grünen
Zum schnellen Gassigehen war der Park „Eschenheimer Anlage“ um die Ecke gut geeignet. Für größere Spaziergänge fuhren wir zu den Hundewiesen.
Parkplätze beim Hotel
Wo ihr parken könnt? Unser Auto stellten wir in der gegenüberliegenden Tiefgarage ab. Fragt am besten bei der Buchung nach einem Parkplatz, kündigt euren Hund und eventuelle Essenswünsche an.
Interessante Stadtführung mit den Vierbeinern
Am Samstag gingen wir im Rahmen unseres Hunde-Kultur-Packagesauf einen Rundgang. Wenn ihr es bucht, habt ihr euren eigenen Gästeführer und könnt Tag und Uhrzeit frei wählen.
Möglich ist etwa eine Führung zu Kunst im öffentlichen Raum plus Hundefoto auf dem Ich-Denkmal von Hans Traxler, alternativ eine Neue-Altstadt-Führung oder durch das Kochkunst-Museum.
Uns zeigte „Herr Mika“ von der Frankfurter Stadtführerei viele schöne Orte in Frankfurt mit Hund. Mikael Horstmann ist nicht nur ausgebildeter Stadtführer, er arbeitet auch an der Rezeption der Villa Orange. Außerdem ist er selbst Blogger, er schreibt über Tafelkultur.
Der Rundgang mit ihm war spannend und abwechslungsreich. Ich finde es immer wieder schön, wenn mir Einheimische ihre Stadt zeigen.
Wasserhäuschen – typisch für Frankfurt
Start- und Zielpunkt war das Hotel. Von hier aus ging es zunächst zur Eschenheimer Anlage. Dort sahen wir eines der typischen Wasserhäuschen, das ist eine Art Kiosk oder Trinkhalle. Heute gibt es noch rund 300 Wasserhäuschen in Frankfurt.
Eines davon beherbergt das Café feinfrankfurt. Als wir hier vorbeiliefen, waren auch ein paar Hunde samt Besitzer:innen zu Gast.
Shoppingmeile Zeil für Hundefans
Vom Hotel aus seid ihr zu Fuß in zehn Minuten an der Shoppingmeile Zeil und in 20 Minuten beim Frankfurter Römer, Römerberg und der Mainbrücke Eiserner Steg mit Blick auf die Skyline.
An der Zeil zeigte uns Herr Mika die Landfest Tagesbar (Zeil 111) mit zwei Dackeln. Außerdem gab er uns den Tipp, in Frankfurt Wochenmärkte zu besuchen. Die sind nicht nur hundetauglich, hier könnt ihr auch leckeres Essen probieren.
Kunst in der Stadt
Kunst sahen wir uns ebenfalls an. Die Skulptur „Elvis“ von Herbert Brandl vor der Galerie Bärbel Grässlin (Schäfergasse 46 B) wirkte so echt, dass Buddy anfangs Angst vor ihr hatte und zurückwich. Einmal an ihren Metallkrallen geschnüffelt, war er jedoch schnell beruhigt. Und posierte danach ganz cool mit Daisy davor.
Frankfurts neue Altstadt
Wir besuchten außerdem die neue Altstadt. 35 Häuser bilden das Stadtviertel zwischen Dom und Römer. Davon sind 15 originalgetreue Rekonstruktionen und 20 Neubauten.
Römer und Römerberg
Den Römer mit dem Brunnen davor mag ich gerne. Noch schöner finde ich aber die Fachwerkhäuser am Römerberg (Ostzeile).
Wie an der Zeil war hier ziemlich viel los. Fotos ohne Menschen machte ich schon am Samstagmorgen um 9 Uhr. Falls ihr euren Hund vor den schönen Häusern fotografieren möchtet, ist das der passende Zeitpunkt.
Tolle Ausflugsziele mit Hund
Was kann man in Frankfurt mit Hund noch machen? Leider sind sie im Palmengarten, im Chinesischen Garten des Bethmann Parks oder in der Kleinmarkthalle nicht erlaubt.
Doch dafür gibt es viele hundefreundliche Ausflugsziele. Grünflächen findet ihr etwa bei den Hundewiesen oder dem Frankfurter Hausberg Lohrberg.
Im Ebbelwei-Expreß bzw. Apfelwein-Express (Stadtrundfahrt in historischer Straßenbahn, die wegen Corona zurzeit nicht stattfindet) sind Hunde willkommen.
Herr Mika legte uns außerdem den Stadtteil Höchst ans Herz, am Schlossplatz findet ihr bunte Fachwerkhäuser.
Von Höchst aus könnt ihr die Personen-Fähre nehmen und weiter zur Schwanheimer Düne laufen, sie ist eine der wenigen Binnendünen Europas. Im Naturschutzgebiet mit Sand, Silbergras und Kiefern sind Hunde angeleint erlaubt.
Lohrberg: Skyline, Weinberg und Apfelwein
Herr Mika und unsere einheimischen Freunde, die wir am Samstagabend zum Essen trafen, waren sich einig: zu Frankfurt mit Hund gehört der rund 185 Meter hohe Lohrberg unbedingt dazu.
Beim beliebten Aussichtspunkt stellten wir unser Auto auf dem kostenfreien Parkplatz ab. Dann liefen wir durch den Lohrpark auf die weite Aussicht über Frankfurt zu. Wir sahen hinter dem Rasen die Bäume, darüber ragten die Wolkenkratzer hervor.
Buddy fotografierten wir vor diesem Panorama, das seht ihr auf dem Titelbild zum Artikel. Es ist ein beliebter Fotospot: Neben uns wurde ein Brautpaar abgelichtet und Spaziergänger zückten ihre Smartphones.
In der Lohrberg-Schänke könnt ihr in Liegestühlen Platz nehmen. Das Restaurant mit Außenterasse sah schön aus.
Unsere Freundin Iris hatte uns jedoch MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum e.V. empfohlen, dorthin liefen wir am Weinberg Lohrberger Hang vorbei.
Im Streuobstzentrum findet ihr etwa das Äppel-Bistro mit Biergarten und einen Hofladen mit Bioprodukten. Hunde sind angeleint erlaubt.
Ich trank den für Frankfurt typischen Ebbelwei (Apfelwein) aus einem Gerippten (Glas mit Rautenmuster). Carsten – der fuhr – bestellte Kaffee und Kuchen. Buddy sah sich in der Zwischenzeit die anderen Hunde an.
Viele Hundewiesen in Frankfurt
Richtig austoben konnte er sich auf den Hundewiesen, zu denen wir fuhren. Die Website der Stadt Frankfurt verzeichnet 25 Orte für den Hundeauslauf.
Wir haben die Auslaufflächen im Volkspark Niddatal und Huthpark (in der Nähe des Lohrbergs) besucht.
Auf den weiten Wiesen besteht keine Leinenpflicht, die Hunde dürfen also frei laufen. Wir ließen Buddy in der fremden Umgebung jedoch lieber an der Schleppleine. Die Hunde, die auf ihn zuliefen, waren alle freundlich und verträglich. Hier konnten wir richtig schön und entspannt spazieren gehen.
Bei Google Maps gebt ihr einfach ein: Hundeauslauffläche, Freilauf im Niddapark. Wir parkten am Straßenrand, bogen rechts in den Weg ein, nahmen beim Stein den Weg links und liefen dann auf die Hundewiese zu. Der Niddapark ist der größte und bekannteste Volkspark der Stadt und gehört zum Frankfurter Grüngürtel.
Bei der „Hundeauslauffläche, Freilauf im Huthpark“ parkten wir ebenfalls am Straßenrand. Dann gingen wir den Weg ein Stück zurück, bis wir zu einem Parkeingang kamen. Es ist ebenfalls ein schöner Hundefreilauf, mit Bänken zum Ausruhen.
Frankfurt Tipps für Restaurants: Essen gehen mit Hund
Wir suchten nach hundefreundlichen Restaurants und Cafés mit veganen Optionen. Und wurden fündig! Diese können wir euch empfehlen:
Kuli Alma – veganes Restaurant mit israelischem Essen
Falafel, Hummus oder Shawarma aßen wir im Kuli Alma (Zum-Jungen-Straße 10). Am Sonntag um 14 Uhr waren auf der Terrasse unter dem Vordach alle Tische besetzt, ihr reserviert also am besten vorab.
Wir bestellten bei der netten Kellnerin, dann kam im nu unser extrem leckeres Essen. Die riesige Vorspeisenplatte und die Portion Shawarma (traditionell ein Fleischgericht, hier mit Seitan zubereitet), waren fast zu viel für uns zwei. Da es aber so gut war, bekamen wir alles auf.
Leider war für die Dessert-Platte kein Platz mehr. Dabei klang sie sehr verlockend mit Käsekuchen, Schokotarte, Erdbeercrumble und Kokosnusseis.
Falls ihr mit Hund hinmöchtet: Da das Restaurant so beliebt ist, war es voll und lebhaft. Buddy ließ sich davon jedoch nicht stören. Er streckte sich auf dem Teppichboden aus und schlief einfach ein.
Restaurant Sampan: Asiatisch essen gehen
Im Sampan (Eckenheimer Landstraße 93) trafen wir uns mit unseren Freunden. Beide leben seit vielen Jahren vegetarisch.
Sie hatten das Restaurant – ebenso wie das Kuli Alma – vorgeschlagen. Das Sampan bietet ostasiatische Gerichte aus Japan, China oder Vietnam auch rein pflanzlich an. Es liegt in der Nähe unseres Hotels Villa Orange, so dass wir zu Fuß hinlaufen konnten.
An diesem Samstagabend war das gemütliche Lokal gut besucht, wir hatten glücklicherweise reserviert. Ihr könnt draußen auf der Terrasse oder drinnen sitzen.
Die vegane Speisekarte (es gibt drei verschiedene Karten) überforderte mich etwas, es gab so viel Leckeres. Schließlich bestellte ich „fake duck“. Die knusprige, gut gewürzte Veggie-Ente kam mit Gemüse, Reis und Erdnusssauce auf den Tisch.
Buddy setzte sich unter den Tisch und ließ sich von unserer Freundin die Ohren kraulen.
Café feinfrankfurt im Park
Ihr habt Lust auf (veganen) Kuchen oder ein Bier? Dann empfehle ich euch das Café feinfrankfurt (Petersstraße 4) in Hotelnähe, von dem ich schon erzählt habe. Es liegt im Park, an einer Straße.
Ihr bestellt am Fenster des Wasserhäuschens. Und setzt euch dann an einen der Tische oder auf das Sofa. Im Freien und mit viel Platz ist es perfekt für den Cafébesuch mit Hund.
Eiscafé Pallina – auch mit veganem Gelato
Die Eisdiele Pallina (Fahrgasse 7) bietet viele leckere Sorten an, einige davon sind vegan. Ich bestellte den exotischen Eisbecher mit Mango-, Blutorangen- und Maracuja-Eis, mit Limetten-Basilikum-Soße, Kokosschaum, Physalis, Ananas und Baiserhippen mit Himbeerstaub. Wow!
Wir aßen die kalte Köstlichkeit vor dem Laden, es gibt leider keine Sitzplätze.
Unser Fazit zu Frankfurt mit Hund
Wir hatten ein tolles Wochenende mit dem Hunde-Kultur-Package der Villa Orange! Im Biohotel schliefen wir sehr gut und frühstückten lecker. Da es so zentral lag, waren wir schnell zu Fuß bei Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Römer oder Römerberg.
Diese und weitere Highlights besuchten wir bei der Stadtführung mit den Fellnasen, dabei bekamen wir zusätzliche Tipps für Frankfurt mit Hund.
Wir sahen uns vom Lohrberg aus die Stadt an, trafen Freunde, aßen vegan und tranken Apfelwein.
Buddy tobte sich auf den Hundewiesen aus und spielte mit Hotelhund Daisy.

(Enthält Werbung) Ein Städtetrip mit Hund? In Frankfurt am Main mit seinen vielen Grünflächen klappte das super. Im August 2021 besuchten wir an einem Wochenende Frankfurt mit Hund. Im Biohotel Villa Orange probierten wir das Hunde-Kultur-Package samt Stadtführung aus. In diesem Artikel erzähle ich euch davon und verrate meine Tipps für hundefreundliche Ausflugsziele und Sehenswürdigkeiten, Hundewiesen, Restaurants und Cafés.
Ein schönes Wochenende in Frankfurt mit Hund
Auch wenn ihr bei Frankfurt zuerst an die Skyline mit hohen Wolkenkratzern denkt, hat „Mainhattan“ auch eine grüne Seite. Der Grüngürtel allein nimmt rund ein Drittel der Stadtfläche ein.
Wir freuten uns sehr über die vielen Hundewiesen, auf denen die Vierbeiner ohne Leine laufen dürfen. Die beiden Auslaufflächen, die wir besuchten, boten reichlich Platz und nette Hundebegegnungen.
Klassische Sehenswürdigkeiten in Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt habe ich schon früh kennengelernt. Denn mehrere Freunde und Freundinnen leben in der Mainmetropole. Wir haben hier eine Studienfreundin besucht, waren auf Sixtiespartys oder in Kunstausstellungen.
Bekannte Sehenswürdigkeiten wie den Römer (Rathaus auf dem Foto), die Fachwerkhäuser am Römerberg (Rathausplatz), die Einkaufsstraßen Zeil und Berger Straße, die Kleinmarkthalle mit Essensständen oder die Apfelweinlokale in Sachsenhausen kannten wir daher schon.
Entspannter Kurzurlaub mit unserer Fellnase
Jetzt gingen wir erstmals mit Buddy auf Entdeckungstour. Mit unserem quirligen, großen Jagdhund – einem ungarischen Magyar Vizsla – haben wir schon viele Reisen unternommen. Im Auto sind wir in Deutschland und Europa unterwegs.
Wir wohnen ja selbst in einer Großstadt, den Trubel kennt er also schon. Aber er braucht auch viel Bewegung im Grünen. Und genügend Ruhe, um zu schlafen und zu kuscheln. So wurde es für uns alle ein schöner Urlaub mit Hund.
Hundefreundliches Hotel Villa Orange
Ich bin ein großer Fan von Biohotels. Die Villa Orange ist Frankfurts einziges Biohotel. Klimaneutral, mit natürlichen Materialien ausgestattet, Naturpflegeprodukten und Bioessen (mit veganen und vegetarischen Optionen).
Das charmante Boutiquehotel zählt 38 Zimmer und liegt zentral im Nordend (Hebelstraße 1).
Hunde-Kultur-Package
Hier testeten wir das Hunde-Kultur-Package, das im Sommer 2020 eingeführt wurde. Es umfasst:
2 Übernachtungen mit Frühstück
Hundebett, Näpfe und Begrüßungsleckerli
Frankfurt Card für einen Tag mit kostenlosem Nahverkehr und Vergünstigungen bei vielen Museen und Einrichtungen
1 x Stadtführung mit der Stadtführerei (rund 1,5 Stunden)
Für Hunde zahlt ihr bei normalen Übernachtungen übrigens 15 Euro Aufschlag pro Tag.
Hotelhund Daisy
Hotelchefin Christiane Hütte hat selbst Labradoodle Daisy an ihrer Seite. Wuschel trifft Zimtnase – bei ihrer ersten Begegnung mochten sich Daisy und Buddy auf Anhieb.
Wie Christiane erzählte, ist Daisy sehr umgänglich und begrüßt vierbeinige Hotelgäste immer gerne. Gemeinsam gingen wir später auf die Stadtführung, das klappte prima.
Relaxen in der Bibliothek oder auf der Terrasse
Mein Lieblingsraum im schön eingerichteten Hotel war die Bibliothek. Auf dem gemütlichen Sofa oder den Sesseln konnten wir lesen und gemeinsam mit Buddy entspannen.
Oder wie wäre es mit einem Kaffee auf der Terrasse?
Zimmer mit Himmelbett, Büchern und Balkon
Wir relaxten auch auf dem Balkon unseres Hotelzimmers im 3. Stock (es gab einen Aufzug).
Hier schliefen wir sehr gut im Himmelbett mit orangefarbenem Baldachin. Für zwischendurch lagen Bücher, leckere Teesorten und kleine Schokoladentäfelchen bereit. Ganz nach meinem Geschmack!
Auch mochte ich das große Badezimmer sehr, mit schwarz-weißen Fliesen und einer Badewanne.
Frühstück mit veganen Optionen
Im Hotel wird nur Frühstück angeboten, außer für Tagungen oder Feiern. Doch das passte gut für uns, da wir gerne Cafés und Restaurants ausprobieren. Wenn morgens nicht viel los ist, könnt ihr euren Hund zum Frühstück mitnehmen.
Die netten Hotelmitarbeiter:innen helfen bei Essenswünschen gerne weiter. Auf dem reichhaltigen Frühstücksbuffet fand ich als Veganerin einiges, was rein pflanzlich war.
Darunter herzhafte und süße Aufstriche, Aufschnitt, Kokosjoghurt oder Pflanzenmilch für meinen Kaffee. Ich griff auch bei Tomaten, Gurken, Oliven und dem Obstsalat zu. Eine tolle Auswahl, die ich so in noch nicht vielen Hotels gesehen habe.
Hundefreundliche Restaurants in der Nähe
Mittagessen und Abendessen gab es für uns in der Stadt. Das Restaurant Portofino (Scheffelstraße 28) liegt etwa nur wenige Schritte entfernt.
Hundesitterin auf Anfrage
Auch ist eine Hundesitterin verfügbar, inclusive Abhol- und Bringservice. Da in Frankfurt viele Restaurants hundefreundlich sind, kam Buddy einfach mit. Die Hundebetreuung ist aber auf jeden Fall eine tolle Option, falls ihr mal ohne Hund shoppen, ins Museum oder in den Club möchtet!
Gassigehen im Grünen
Zum schnellen Gassigehen war der Park „Eschenheimer Anlage“ um die Ecke gut geeignet. Für größere Spaziergänge fuhren wir zu den Hundewiesen.
Parkplätze beim Hotel
Wo ihr parken könnt? Unser Auto stellten wir in der gegenüberliegenden Tiefgarage ab. Fragt am besten bei der Buchung nach einem Parkplatz, kündigt euren Hund und eventuelle Essenswünsche an.
Interessante Stadtführung mit den Vierbeinern
Am Samstag gingen wir im Rahmen unseres Hunde-Kultur-Packagesauf einen Rundgang. Wenn ihr es bucht, habt ihr euren eigenen Gästeführer und könnt Tag und Uhrzeit frei wählen.
Möglich ist etwa eine Führung zu Kunst im öffentlichen Raum plus Hundefoto auf dem Ich-Denkmal von Hans Traxler, alternativ eine Neue-Altstadt-Führung oder durch das Kochkunst-Museum.
Uns zeigte „Herr Mika“ von der Frankfurter Stadtführerei viele schöne Orte in Frankfurt mit Hund. Mikael Horstmann ist nicht nur ausgebildeter Stadtführer, er arbeitet auch an der Rezeption der Villa Orange. Außerdem ist er selbst Blogger, er schreibt über Tafelkultur.
Der Rundgang mit ihm war spannend und abwechslungsreich. Ich finde es immer wieder schön, wenn mir Einheimische ihre Stadt zeigen.
Wasserhäuschen – typisch für Frankfurt
Start- und Zielpunkt war das Hotel. Von hier aus ging es zunächst zur Eschenheimer Anlage. Dort sahen wir eines der typischen Wasserhäuschen, das ist eine Art Kiosk oder Trinkhalle. Heute gibt es noch rund 300 Wasserhäuschen in Frankfurt.
Eines davon beherbergt das Café feinfrankfurt. Als wir hier vorbeiliefen, waren auch ein paar Hunde samt Besitzer:innen zu Gast.
Shoppingmeile Zeil für Hundefans
Vom Hotel aus seid ihr zu Fuß in zehn Minuten an der Shoppingmeile Zeil und in 20 Minuten beim Frankfurter Römer, Römerberg und der Mainbrücke Eiserner Steg mit Blick auf die Skyline.
An der Zeil zeigte uns Herr Mika die Landfest Tagesbar (Zeil 111) mit zwei Dackeln. Außerdem gab er uns den Tipp, in Frankfurt Wochenmärkte zu besuchen. Die sind nicht nur hundetauglich, hier könnt ihr auch leckeres Essen probieren.
Kunst in der Stadt
Kunst sahen wir uns ebenfalls an. Die Skulptur „Elvis“ von Herbert Brandl vor der Galerie Bärbel Grässlin (Schäfergasse 46 B) wirkte so echt, dass Buddy anfangs Angst vor ihr hatte und zurückwich. Einmal an ihren Metallkrallen geschnüffelt, war er jedoch schnell beruhigt. Und posierte danach ganz cool mit Daisy davor.
Frankfurts neue Altstadt
Wir besuchten außerdem die neue Altstadt. 35 Häuser bilden das Stadtviertel zwischen Dom und Römer. Davon sind 15 originalgetreue Rekonstruktionen und 20 Neubauten.
Römer und Römerberg
Den Römer mit dem Brunnen davor mag ich gerne. Noch schöner finde ich aber die Fachwerkhäuser am Römerberg (Ostzeile).
Wie an der Zeil war hier ziemlich viel los. Fotos ohne Menschen machte ich schon am Samstagmorgen um 9 Uhr. Falls ihr euren Hund vor den schönen Häusern fotografieren möchtet, ist das der passende Zeitpunkt.
Tolle Ausflugsziele mit Hund
Was kann man in Frankfurt mit Hund noch machen? Leider sind sie im Palmengarten, im Chinesischen Garten des Bethmann Parks oder in der Kleinmarkthalle nicht erlaubt.
Doch dafür gibt es viele hundefreundliche Ausflugsziele. Grünflächen findet ihr etwa bei den Hundewiesen oder dem Frankfurter Hausberg Lohrberg.
Im Ebbelwei-Expreß bzw. Apfelwein-Express (Stadtrundfahrt in historischer Straßenbahn, die wegen Corona zurzeit nicht stattfindet) sind Hunde willkommen.
Herr Mika legte uns außerdem den Stadtteil Höchst ans Herz, am Schlossplatz findet ihr bunte Fachwerkhäuser.
Von Höchst aus könnt ihr die Personen-Fähre nehmen und weiter zur Schwanheimer Düne laufen, sie ist eine der wenigen Binnendünen Europas. Im Naturschutzgebiet mit Sand, Silbergras und Kiefern sind Hunde angeleint erlaubt.
Lohrberg: Skyline, Weinberg und Apfelwein
Herr Mika und unsere einheimischen Freunde, die wir am Samstagabend zum Essen trafen, waren sich einig: zu Frankfurt mit Hund gehört der rund 185 Meter hohe Lohrberg unbedingt dazu.
Beim beliebten Aussichtspunkt stellten wir unser Auto auf dem kostenfreien Parkplatz ab. Dann liefen wir durch den Lohrpark auf die weite Aussicht über Frankfurt zu. Wir sahen hinter dem Rasen die Bäume, darüber ragten die Wolkenkratzer hervor.
Buddy fotografierten wir vor diesem Panorama, das seht ihr auf dem Titelbild zum Artikel. Es ist ein beliebter Fotospot: Neben uns wurde ein Brautpaar abgelichtet und Spaziergänger zückten ihre Smartphones.
In der Lohrberg-Schänke könnt ihr in Liegestühlen Platz nehmen. Das Restaurant mit Außenterasse sah schön aus.
Unsere Freundin Iris hatte uns jedoch MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg Streuobstzentrum e.V. empfohlen, dorthin liefen wir am Weinberg Lohrberger Hang vorbei.
Im Streuobstzentrum findet ihr etwa das Äppel-Bistro mit Biergarten und einen Hofladen mit Bioprodukten. Hunde sind angeleint erlaubt.
Ich trank den für Frankfurt typischen Ebbelwei (Apfelwein) aus einem Gerippten (Glas mit Rautenmuster). Carsten – der fuhr – bestellte Kaffee und Kuchen. Buddy sah sich in der Zwischenzeit die anderen Hunde an.
Viele Hundewiesen in Frankfurt
Richtig austoben konnte er sich auf den Hundewiesen, zu denen wir fuhren. Die Website der Stadt Frankfurt verzeichnet 25 Orte für den Hundeauslauf.
Wir haben die Auslaufflächen im Volkspark Niddatal und Huthpark (in der Nähe des Lohrbergs) besucht.
Auf den weiten Wiesen besteht keine Leinenpflicht, die Hunde dürfen also frei laufen. Wir ließen Buddy in der fremden Umgebung jedoch lieber an der Schleppleine. Die Hunde, die auf ihn zuliefen, waren alle freundlich und verträglich. Hier konnten wir richtig schön und entspannt spazieren gehen.
Bei Google Maps gebt ihr einfach ein: Hundeauslauffläche, Freilauf im Niddapark. Wir parkten am Straßenrand, bogen rechts in den Weg ein, nahmen beim Stein den Weg links und liefen dann auf die Hundewiese zu. Der Niddapark ist der größte und bekannteste Volkspark der Stadt und gehört zum Frankfurter Grüngürtel.
Bei der „Hundeauslauffläche, Freilauf im Huthpark“ parkten wir ebenfalls am Straßenrand. Dann gingen wir den Weg ein Stück zurück, bis wir zu einem Parkeingang kamen. Es ist ebenfalls ein schöner Hundefreilauf, mit Bänken zum Ausruhen.
Frankfurt Tipps für Restaurants: Essen gehen mit Hund
Wir suchten nach hundefreundlichen Restaurants und Cafés mit veganen Optionen. Und wurden fündig! Diese können wir euch empfehlen:
Kuli Alma – veganes Restaurant mit israelischem Essen
Falafel, Hummus oder Shawarma aßen wir im Kuli Alma (Zum-Jungen-Straße 10). Am Sonntag um 14 Uhr waren auf der Terrasse unter dem Vordach alle Tische besetzt, ihr reserviert also am besten vorab.
Wir bestellten bei der netten Kellnerin, dann kam im nu unser extrem leckeres Essen. Die riesige Vorspeisenplatte und die Portion Shawarma (traditionell ein Fleischgericht, hier mit Seitan zubereitet), waren fast zu viel für uns zwei. Da es aber so gut war, bekamen wir alles auf.
Leider war für die Dessert-Platte kein Platz mehr. Dabei klang sie sehr verlockend mit Käsekuchen, Schokotarte, Erdbeercrumble und Kokosnusseis.
Falls ihr mit Hund hinmöchtet: Da das Restaurant so beliebt ist, war es voll und lebhaft. Buddy ließ sich davon jedoch nicht stören. Er streckte sich auf dem Teppichboden aus und schlief einfach ein.
Restaurant Sampan: Asiatisch essen gehen
Im Sampan (Eckenheimer Landstraße 93) trafen wir uns mit unseren Freunden. Beide leben seit vielen Jahren vegetarisch.
Sie hatten das Restaurant – ebenso wie das Kuli Alma – vorgeschlagen. Das Sampan bietet ostasiatische Gerichte aus Japan, China oder Vietnam auch rein pflanzlich an. Es liegt in der Nähe unseres Hotels Villa Orange, so dass wir zu Fuß hinlaufen konnten.
An diesem Samstagabend war das gemütliche Lokal gut besucht, wir hatten glücklicherweise reserviert. Ihr könnt draußen auf der Terrasse oder drinnen sitzen.
Die vegane Speisekarte (es gibt drei verschiedene Karten) überforderte mich etwas, es gab so viel Leckeres. Schließlich bestellte ich „fake duck“. Die knusprige, gut gewürzte Veggie-Ente kam mit Gemüse, Reis und Erdnusssauce auf den Tisch.
Buddy setzte sich unter den Tisch und ließ sich von unserer Freundin die Ohren kraulen.
Café feinfrankfurt im Park
Ihr habt Lust auf (veganen) Kuchen oder ein Bier? Dann empfehle ich euch das Café feinfrankfurt (Petersstraße 4) in Hotelnähe, von dem ich schon erzählt habe. Es liegt im Park, an einer Straße.
Ihr bestellt am Fenster des Wasserhäuschens. Und setzt euch dann an einen der Tische oder auf das Sofa. Im Freien und mit viel Platz ist es perfekt für den Cafébesuch mit Hund.
Eiscafé Pallina – auch mit veganem Gelato
Die Eisdiele Pallina (Fahrgasse 7) bietet viele leckere Sorten an, einige davon sind vegan. Ich bestellte den exotischen Eisbecher mit Mango-, Blutorangen- und Maracuja-Eis, mit Limetten-Basilikum-Soße, Kokosschaum, Physalis, Ananas und Baiserhippen mit Himbeerstaub. Wow!
Wir aßen die kalte Köstlichkeit vor dem Laden, es gibt leider keine Sitzplätze.
Unser Fazit zu Frankfurt mit Hund
Wir hatten ein tolles Wochenende mit dem Hunde-Kultur-Package der Villa Orange! Im Biohotel schliefen wir sehr gut und frühstückten lecker. Da es so zentral lag, waren wir schnell zu Fuß bei Sehenswürdigkeiten wie Römer oder Römerberg.
Diese und weitere Highlights besuchten wir bei der Stadtführung mit den Fellnasen, dabei bekamen wir zusätzliche Tipps für Frankfurt mit Hund.
Wir sahen uns vom Lohrberg aus die Stadt an, trafen Freunde, aßen vegan und tranken Apfelwein.
Buddy tobte sich auf den Hundewiesen aus und spielte mit Hotelhund Daisy.
Für uns drei war es eine rundum schöne Städtereise!

The previously unrecorded behavior occurs in the larvae of a species of lined flat bark beetle (Laemophloeus biguttatus). Specifically, the larvae are able to spring into the air, with each larva curling itself into a loop as it leaps forward. What makes these leaps unique is how the larvae are able to pull it off.
“Jumping at all is exceedingly rare in the larvae of beetle species, and the mechanism they use to execute their leaps is — as far as we can tell — previously unrecorded in any insect larvae,” says Matt Bertone, corresponding author of a paper on the discovery and director of North Carolina State University’s Plant Disease and Insect Clinic.
While there are other insect species that are capable of making prodigious leaps, they rely on something called a “latch-mediated spring actuation mechanism.” This means that they essentially have two parts of their body latch onto each other while the insect exerts force, building up a significant amount of energy. The insect then unlatches the two parts, releasing all of that energy at once, allowing it to spring off the ground.
“What makes the L. biguttatus so remarkable is that it makes these leaps without latching two parts of its body together,” Bertone says. “Instead, it uses claws on its legs to grip the ground while it builds up that potential energy — and once those claws release their hold on the ground, that potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, launching it skyward.”
The discovery of the behavior was somewhat serendipitous. Bertone had collected a variety of insect samples from a rotting tree near his lab in order to photograph them when he noticed that these beetle larvae appeared to be hopping.
Bertone and paper co-author Adrian Smith then decided to film the behavior in order to get a better look at what was going on. That’s when they began to understand just how peculiar the behavior was. Smith is a research assistant professor of biological sciences at NC State and head of the Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
“The way these larvae were jumping was impressive at first, but we didn’t immediately understand how unique it was,” Bertone says. “We then shared it with a number of beetle experts around the country, and none of them had seen the jumping behavior before. That’s when we realized we needed to take a closer look at just how the larvae was doing what it was doing.”
To determine how L. biguttatus was able to execute its acrobatics, the researchers filmed the jumps at speeds of up to 60,000 frames per second. This allowed them to capture all of the external movements associated with the jumps, and suggested that the legs were essentially creating a latching mechanism with the ground.
The researchers also conducted a muscle mass assessment to determine whether it was possible for the larvae to make their leaps using just their muscles, as opposed to using a latch mechanism to store energy. They found that the larvae lacked sufficient muscle to hurl themselves into the air as far or as fast as they had been filmed jumping. Ergo, latching onto the ground was the only way the larvae could pull off their aerial feats.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated video about jumping maggots, Smith had included a short clip of the jumping behavior in L. biguttatus. That video was seen by a researcher in Japan named Takahiro Yoshida, who had witnessed similar jumps in the larvae of another beetle species called Placonotus testaceus, but had not published anything related to the behavior.

The previously unrecorded behavior occurs in the larvae of a species of lined flat bark beetle (Laemophloeus biguttatus). Specifically, the larvae are able to spring into the air, with each larva curling itself into a loop as it leaps forward. What makes these leaps unique is how the larvae are able to pull it off.
“Jumping at all is exceedingly rare in the larvae of beetle species, and the mechanism they use to execute their leaps is — as far as we can tell — previously unrecorded in any insect larvae,” says Matt Bertone, corresponding author of a paper on the discovery and director of North Carolina State University’s Plant Disease and Insect Clinic.
While there are other insect species that are capable of making prodigious leaps, they rely on something called a “latch-mediated spring actuation mechanism.” This means that they essentially have two parts of their body latch onto each other while the insect exerts force, building up a significant amount of energy. The insect then unlatches the two parts, releasing all of that energy at once, allowing it to spring off the ground.
“What makes the L. biguttatus so remarkable is that it makes these leaps without latching two parts of its body together,” Bertone says. “Instead, it uses claws on its legs to grip the ground while it builds up that potential energy — and once those claws release their hold on the ground, that potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, launching it skyward.”
The discovery of the behavior was somewhat serendipitous. Bertone had collected a variety of insect samples from a rotting tree near his lab in order to photograph them when he noticed that these beetle larvae appeared to be hopping.
Bertone and paper co-author Adrian Smith then decided to film the behavior in order to get a better look at what was going on. That’s when they began to understand just how peculiar the behavior was. Smith is a research assistant professor of biological sciences at NC State and head of the Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
“The way these larvae were jumping was impressive at first, but we didn’t immediately understand how unique it was,” Bertone says. “We then shared it with a number of beetle experts around the country, and none of them had seen the jumping behavior before. That’s when we realized we needed to take a closer look at just how the larvae was doing what it was doing.”
To determine how L. biguttatus was able to execute its acrobatics, the researchers filmed the jumps at speeds of up to 60,000 frames per second. This allowed them to capture all of the external movements associated with the jumps, and suggested that the legs were essentially creating a latching mechanism with the ground.
The researchers also conducted a muscle mass assessment to determine whether it was possible for the larvae to make their leaps using just their muscles, as opposed to using a latch mechanism to store energy. They found that the larvae lacked sufficient muscle to hurl themselves into the air as far or as fast as they had been filmed jumping. Ergo, latching onto the ground was the only way the larvae could pull off their aerial feats.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated video about jumping maggots, Smith had included a short clip of the jumping behavior in L. biguttatus. That video was seen by a researcher in Japan named Takahiro Yoshida, who had witnessed similar jumps in the larvae of another beetle species called Placonotus testaceus, but had not published anything related to the behavior.

El pasado 20 de enero, Adele publicó en sus redes sociales un video en el que, entre lágrimas, pide disculpas a sus fans por verse obligada a posponer indefinidamente el espectáculo que tenía previsto estrenar en Las Vegas por la ola de contagios de Covid entre los miembros de su equipo.

“Hemos intentado absolutamente todo lo que hemos podido para montarlo a tiempo. Y para que sea lo suficientemente bueno. Pero nos han destruido los retrasos en las entregas y el coronavirus. La mitad de mi tripulación, la mitad de mi equipo están de baja con covid. Todavía lo están. EXCLUSIVE: A new survey published today on the state of the UK’s independent production sector has revealed the harsh challenges being faced by the country’s indie producers.
Among the eye-opening findings are that 75% of independent film producer respondees who have made 1-2 feature films earned less than $7,800 (£6,000) per year over the past five years for their film producing work. Of those who have made 5-10 feature films, 67% still earned less than $19,500 (£15,000) per year over the past five years from producing their projects.
The survey was conducted by UK producer-supporting advocacy group the Producers’ Roundtable in association with union Pact and has been backed by the majority of the UK’s major films orgs including the BFI, Film4, BBC Films, and several significant indie producers.
The survey also showed that 53% of independent film producers said they had given up their fee multiple times to get their films made, with 77% saying they had done this at least once.
Further findings included that 30% of BAFTA nominated/winning independent film producers who responded earned less than $13,000 (£10,000) over the past two years for their film producing work.
It also noted that of the respondees, 31% attended private school (compared to 6.5% of people in the UK).
In total, 83% of independent film producers think being an indie producer in the UK today is “not sustainable”.
The Producers’ Roundtable, which was established by rising producers Loran Dunn, Sophie Reynolds and Helen Simmons and has more than 100 members, is now touting potential solutions to the problem.
You can read these in full below, but the guidelines call on private financiers, sales agents, talent and lit agents, distributors, writers, directors, and other gatekeepers to support a series of measures to create a more sustainable industry.
Those include fixing the producers’ fee on any film budgeted below $3.9m (£3m) at a minimum of 8%, reducing the amount of fee deferrals, and stipulating that producers are not cut out of creative discussions with the film’s talent.
See-Saw Films’ Hakan Kousetta and Moon producer Nicky Bentham, who co-chair Pact’s film policy group, both said they were “strongly in favour” of the guidelines.
“This research from the Producers’ Roundtable reinforces what we’ve known for a long time. The British indie film industry is not sustainable without a proper recognition of the value of the producer and Pact is strongly in favour of these industry-produced guidelines. For too long producers have been diminished and expected to have only the crumbs left on the table. If we want a diverse, inclusive and incentivised independent film sector then there needs to be a dramatic shift from the old attitudes,” Kousetta and Bentham jointly commented.
Rose Garnett, Director of BBC Films, also said that the guidelines “broadly reflect our current position”.
“BBC Films supports filmmakers, by which we mean producers as much as writers and directors, at every stage of their careers. We’ve enjoyed a productive dialogue with the Producers’ Roundtable and we fully support their aim to make producing a more sustainable and inclusive career for all – in fact their suggestions broadly reflect our current position,” Garnett said.
The survey was sent out across the biz and results were drawn from a total of 149 responses.
It follows last week’s publishing of the latest batch of BFI stats relating to production activity on these shores. On one hand, there is more money than ever in the biz, with a continued surge of inward investment leading to record levels of money being spent on production. On the other, the growth is entirely in non-UK projects, and the country’s homegrown producers are not feeling the benefit – UK domestic film production was down a staggering 45% in 2019 on the previous year.

Also responding to the findings, Film4 Director Daniel Battsek said, “We recognize, from working regularly with them, the challenges independent producers face in the early part of their careers. It’s in everyone’s interests that our industry produces a variety of stories from a broad range of storytellers, in order to keep audiences coming to cinemas. Film4 support the Producers’ Roundtable’s aims and will work with our production partners to help steer the wider industry towards adopting these guidelines.”
Soon-to-be BFI CEO Ben Roberts added, “Independent producers are key in ensuring cultural diversity in our filmmaking, and in working closely with them we’re aware of the continued challenges they face. We have welcomed contributing to the Producers’ Roundtable and they have helped us ensure that our guidelines remain as supportive as possible.”
Warp Films, which produced Four Lions and ’71, said that to create “a diverse and sustainable independent film industry”, producers must be “supported and paid fairly”.
“The producers we are talking about are not at the very beginning of their careers, they are three, five, ten years in. They are being supported by public and private financiers here in the UK and abroad and are receiving accolades for their work. And yet, still, they are struggling to make a living,” explained Producers’ Roundtable founder Dunn.
“It is important to recognise the privileged background that is required to live on such a low income for so many years. As a collective we recognize that many of the surveyed producers have only been able to stay in the game for so long because of other sources of wealth. We want to change that,” Simmons added.
“Our survey shows that this is an industry which expects its producers to work for very little. We want to ask why this has been acceptable for so long and how we can make producing a career that is viable for a far wider pool of talented individuals, many of whom may come from lower socio-economic backgrounds,” Reynolds said.
The Producers’ Roundtable guidelines:
1) In order for production companies and producers to be able to sustain themselves, and the writers and directors they work with, we recommend the production fee on any film under $3.9m (£3m) should be no less than 8% of the direct costs of production, to be divided between the producer(s) and production company(ies) as the lead producer sees fit.
2) Deferral of producer fees for development or production should not be encouraged, endorsed or suggested by any financier or their representatives, and the Producers’ Roundtable strongly encourages producers not to defer any of their fees, instead finding alternative solutions and savings within the budget. Most producers have already deferred their fees during the development of the project, and even successful features which find an audience are unlikely to see a return at the back end for the producer themselves, making fees pivotal.
3) Given the importance of talent relationships and transparency across the board, as well as a need to not undermine the fundamental role of the producer, especially at an early stage of their career, the producer must be involved in all meetings and correspondence with the writer or director, pertaining to the shared project. Financiers must not meet with the writer or director, specifically about the shared project, except as organised and attended by the producer(s). This should be the case during the consideration of the project, during development and production, and during the project’s initial exploitation.
4) No production financier may participate in net profits from the producer pool of net profits, even in the event of receiving a producer credit; this must be reserved only for the filmmakers.
5) Given the importance of film festivals in promoting and selling a film, and in career progression for all filmmakers involved, it is vital that the producer of a film is supported in attending its premiere, equal to the director, especially as salaried executive producers are often paid to attend themselves. We therefore encourage sales agents to make sure the producer is always tied to the director in attendance of any international and UK premiere of the film, including their travel, accommodation and accreditation expenses. We hope financiers will also encourage and financially support this move.

The food in Sardinia is truly excellent and, for some time now, in some farmhouses it is even possible to learn a few recipes and then be able to try them after returning from holidays. Frankfurt habe ich schon früh kennengelernt. Denn mehrere Freunde und Freundinnen leben in der Mainmetropole. Wir haben hier eine Studienfreundin besucht, waren auf Sixtiespartys oder in Kunstausstellungen.
Ich bin ein großer Fan von Biohotels. Die 
Das charmante Boutiquehotel zählt 38 Zimmer und liegt zentral im Nordend (Hebelstraße 1).
Hier testeten wir das 
Mein Lieblingsraum im schön eingerichteten Hotel war die Bibliothek. Auf dem gemütlichen Sofa oder den Sesseln konnten wir lesen und gemeinsam mit Buddy entspannen.
Oder wie wäre es mit einem Kaffee auf der Terrasse?
Im Hotel wird nur Frühstück angeboten, außer für Tagungen oder Feiern. Doch das passte gut für uns, da wir gerne Cafés und Restaurants ausprobieren. Wenn morgens nicht viel los ist, könnt ihr euren Hund zum Frühstück mitnehmen.
Am Samstag gingen wir im Rahmen unseres 
Den Römer mit dem Brunnen davor mag ich gerne. Noch schöner finde ich aber die Fachwerkhäuser am Römerberg (Ostzeile).
Herr Mika und unsere einheimischen Freunde, die wir am Samstagabend zum Essen trafen, waren sich einig: zu Frankfurt mit Hund gehört der rund 185 Meter hohe Lohrberg unbedingt dazu.
Ich trank den für Frankfurt typischen Ebbelwei (Apfelwein) aus einem Gerippten (Glas mit Rautenmuster). Carsten – der fuhr – bestellte Kaffee und Kuchen. Buddy sah sich in der Zwischenzeit die anderen Hunde an.
Richtig austoben konnte er sich auf den Hundewiesen, zu denen wir fuhren. Die Website der Stadt Frankfurt verzeichnet 25 Orte für den Hundeauslauf.
Falafel, Hummus oder Shawarma aßen wir im Kuli Alma (Zum-Jungen-Straße 10). Am Sonntag um 14 Uhr waren auf der Terrasse unter dem Vordach alle Tische besetzt, ihr reserviert also am besten vorab.
Die Eisdiele Pallina (Fahrgasse 7) bietet viele leckere Sorten an, einige davon sind vegan. Ich bestellte den exotischen Eisbecher mit Mango-, Blutorangen- und Maracuja-Eis, mit Limetten-Basilikum-Soße, Kokosschaum, Physalis, Ananas und Baiserhippen mit Himbeerstaub. Wow!
