Bangkok - ‘Beyond Borders: Reportage from Our Mekong’, the newest book published by IPS Asia-Pacific, was launched at the regional media foundation’s workshop for Mekong journalists in January 2012.

The publication is the seventh compilation of the work of journalist-fellows in the Imaging Our Mekong media fellowship programme that IPS Asia-Pacific has implemented with its partner, Probe Media Foundation Inc, since 2002. Read more »

SINGAPORE – How to create space in South-east Asian media for reporting on social and development issues in the context of Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) regionalism was the focus of an experts’ meeting organised in early November by IPS Asia-Pacific, with the ASEAN Studies Centre as co-organiser.

Held at the Institute of South-east Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore, the meeting saw a healthy exchange of views among senior journalists and editors from within the region, foreign policy experts, researchers and writers about how to get more critical, in-depth reportage around ASEAN given that much of the news coverage around it focuses on high-profile summits and gravitates toward state voices, and as its goal of an ASEAN Community in 2015 nears. Young IPS reporters joined young entrepreneurs from around the world in Cotonou, Benin, in October to share knowledge and mark the launch of the Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN).

IPS Africa, with support of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), provided reporters with multimedia skills to promote innovative coverage of agriculture targeted at the youth. Read more »

ips-ambevThe winners of the Journalism Contest “Water: The Most Essential of All Natural Resources” were announced by the three-member panel appointed to judge the entries. The five best pieces were written by journalists from four different countries, namely Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela.

The first prize in the competition organised by AMBEV and the news agency IPS Inter Press Service went to the piece “Y sigue haciendo agua” (Still Treading Water), submitted by Marina Aizen, a reporter for Viva Magazine, distributed with Argentina’s Clarín newspaper.  The first place winner will receive a prize of US$ 5,000. IPS Latin America, in collaboration with UNDP and Fundación Puntos de Encuentro, organised the national media seminar “Women, Work and Leadership in Nicaragua. Gender equity, a key development goal”.

The seminar, held on 3-4 November in Managua, analysed the implementation of the 3rd Development Goal in the country, with a focus on the issue of gender equality in the employment sector. Read more »
