The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the global news agency IPS – Inter Press Service concluded their High-Level meeting “Post-crisis world: the impact in developing countries and on the media” with a speech (in Spanish) from Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, on the topic “Deadly sins of our upside down world”. The event took place on September 7th in Madrid.
AECID and IPS organized the meeting to analyse the 2008 – 2010 economic and financial crisis and its effects in developing countries from the perspective of the media, with a focus on generating new visions and proposals towards a more inclusive development. Read more »

The 9th CIVICUS World Assembly gathered over 500 representatives of civil society, donors, governments, business, academics, media and youth from about 100 countries, from 20 – 23 August, in Montreal, Canada, to seek closer collaboration and greater resolve in addressing the global crises confronting humanity.
Mario Lubetkin, IPS Director General, was a keynote speaker at the Opening Plenary leading the discussion together with Ingrid Srinath, CIVICUS’ Secretary General and the wider audience. The agenda-setting conversation revolved around the assembly’s programme theme of economic justice and the main issues as seen by civil society groups around the world.

With the motto Another World is Possible. Another US is Necessary! the USSF runs from 22 – 26 June in Detroit, Michigan. Thousands of people will be convening to discuss and share experiences – with the aim to develop leadership, vision, and strategies needed to realize a better world.
IPS TerraViva is present in Detroit in an effort carried out with The Media Consortium (TMC), a network of the leading, progressive, independent media outlets in the U.S., to provide coverage of the USSF from within the context of the whole WSF process. Read more »

In the framework of the recent European Union-Latin America/Caribbean Summit (EU-LAC), IPS – Inter Press Service and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a media roundtable in Madrid “Europe and Latin America, strategic allies in the global debate?”. The event was held in the head office of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) with the participation of governments, international organizations executives and journalists of both regions.
