More than sixty participants joined lively debates on the theme “Communication and Development: policies, networks and technologies”. The seminar was held 5 – 7 July in the University of Santander, Spain as part of a series of joint activities by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the global news agency IPS Inter Press Service in 2010.

The seminar gave the opportunity to different actors in the field of communication and development cooperation to exchange their experiences and create coordination channels to improve public communication policy. Read more »

foei2Together with its partner Friends of the Earth International, IPS organised on May 28 in Prague a communication training around the issue of mining and oil and gas exploration. Former IPS editor in chief Miren Gutierrez discussed with around 25 NGO representatives ways to reach mass audiences through the mass media and how to promote investigative journalism. The participants also drafted a communications strategy and received hands-on media training. Read more »

In the framework of the recent European Union-Latin America/Caribbean Summit (EU-LAC), IPS – Inter Press Service and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a media roundtable in Madrid “Europe and Latin America, strategic allies in the global debate?”. The event was held in the head office of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) with the participation of governments, international organizations executives and journalists of both regions. Since 2007 the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation(AECID) and the global news agency IPS Inter Press Service have a partnership aimed at putting development higher up media agendas. On 25 March, in Madrid, the partners launched a new publication and presented joint AECID-IPS initiatives for 2010 to a large audience of Spanish civil society, media and cooperation representatives.

The book “Communication and Development – Steps towards Coherence” includes contributions from renowned international analysts like Ignacio Ramonet, Marcial Murciano, Osa Maria Alfaro and Steffen Beitz, among others, reflecting on communication as a tool for promoting development and citizen’s education about values like solidarity. The book was presented by Carlos Alberdi, AECID Cultural and Scientific Relations Director, Mario Lubetkin, IPS Director General and Raquel Martinez-Gomez, the book’s coordinator. Read more »

Inter Press Service (IPS) is pleased to announce the publication of the book “Comunicacion y desarrollo: en busca de la coherencia”, published in collaboration with Fundacion Carolina and the International University Menendez Pelayo (UIMP).

The book is the outcome of a seminar organized in Santander, Spain by IPS and Fundacion Carolina during the summer of 2007, which analysed the role of communication in development cooperation. Read more »
