Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane of Cape Town, South Africa addressed the IPS 2010 annual meeting in Madrid with a powerful keynote speech and a conclusion that Afro-optimism must replace Afro-pessimism as Africans themselves face up to and solve the challenges of the continent. The Archbishop is the founder of “African Monitor” an NGO dedicated to bringing African voices for African development. The public seminar on Thursday 25th November was jointly convened and hosted by IPS with AECID, the Spanish Agency for International Co-operation with around 200 journalists, researchers, activists and others in attendance. Francisco Moza Zapatero, the new director of AECID, and Federico Mayor, the Chair of the IPS Board, opened the meeting. Read more »

foldercover1The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the venue for a one-day seminar devoted to the role of information and communication and development cooperation organized by IPS – Inter Press Service and Link 2007, a key network of Italian NGOs. The event was supported by the Italian Development Cooperation Directorate and the Italian National Press Federation (FNSI).

The seminar aimed to open a dialogue among journalists covering development cooperation issues and NGO communication officers, to give them the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences to better tackle problems and opportunities. Read more »

More than sixty participants joined lively debates on the theme “Communication and Development: policies, networks and technologies”. The seminar was held 5 – 7 July in the University of Santander, Spain as part of a series of joint activities by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the global news agency IPS Inter Press Service in 2010.

The seminar gave the opportunity to different actors in the field of communication and development cooperation to exchange their experiences and create coordination channels to improve public communication policy. Read more »

foei2Together with its partner Friends of the Earth International, IPS organised on May 28 in Prague a communication training around the issue of mining and oil and gas exploration. Former IPS editor in chief Miren Gutierrez discussed with around 25 NGO representatives ways to reach mass audiences through the mass media and how to promote investigative journalism. The participants also drafted a communications strategy and received hands-on media training. Read more »

In the framework of the recent European Union-Latin America/Caribbean Summit (EU-LAC), IPS – Inter Press Service and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a media roundtable in Madrid “Europe and Latin America, strategic allies in the global debate?”. The event was held in the head office of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) with the participation of governments, international organizations executives and journalists of both regions.
