IPS-Inter Press Service Director General Ramesh Jaura addressed a special session of the Group of 77 (G-77) plenary meeting at the U.N. in Vienna on October 7, stressing that IPS was the world’s leading provider of news and analysis on sustainable development. He told ambassadors of the group comprising 134 developing nations that IPS was set up the same year as the G-77 and UNCTAD.

Since 1964, the IPS news agency had been committed to giving voice to the voiceless and making that voice heard by the international community. In the process, IPS had also been cooperating closely with the G-77. This cooperation included developing joint media products.

Jaura invited the G-77 to join hands with IPS on a new platform for promoting global governance through adequate information and communication.

The session was presided by the Philippine Ambassador Lourdes O. Yparraguirre, who took over the G-77 chair recently from Sri Lankan Ambassador Abdul Azeez. Ambassador Azeez initiated the move to invite IPS to a special session of the G-77 plenary meeting at the U.N. in Vienna. He praised IPS’ commitment to projecting the perspectives and concerns of the countries of the South in its news and analysis from around the world.
