James Jeffrey

A journalist focusing primarily on longer form features, Jeffrey has been based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, since October 2013 covering Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa for various international media.

Jeffrey, who comes from the United Kingdom, travels throughout the Horn of Africa reporting on issues ranging from political unrest to drought to the coffee industry to early morning runs with hyenas.

He says that since his first visit in 2000 he has always been entranced by Ethiopia, a state of mind that now extends to including the neighboring countries of Djibouti and Somaliland.

“It’s a constant battle to persuade Western media to take stories from the Horn of Africa, so having IPS as a platform for such stories is both a relief and immensely satisfying professionally,” Jeffrey says. “While we all share the same human constitution and the values that entails, at the same time we are all very different, experiencing different cultures, histories and influences, and trying to tell those stories and explain those differences is great fun and a great privilege and hugely important if we are ever to understand and appreciate each other more.”
