Introducing IPS to United Nations organizations in Vienna and charting out a strategy to bridge these to the world body’s headquarters in New York was an important objective of IPS Director General Ramesh Jaura’s visit May 14-16 to the Austrian capital. He was accompanied and supported by Ambassador Dr. Walther Lichem, Vice Chair of the Inter Press Service (IPS) International Association, the world’s leading information and communication channel for promoting the global agenda and global governance.

In discussions with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Executive Secretary Dr. Lassina Zerbo, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director General Li Yong {see picture} as well as high-level representatives, among others of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOS) and United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), the IPS delegation explored possibilities of joint media projects comprising capacity building.

Dr. Lichem and Jaura also conferred with Ambassador Erwin Kubesch at Austria’s Foreign Ministry to sound out possibilities of funding several activities of IPS. In meetings with senior officials of the OSCE and the International Press Institute (IPI) Secretary-General Ms. Alison Bethel McKenzie, the DG also discussed possibilities of cooperation.

Discussions with USG Dr. Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, UN-DPI, and the Director, United Nations Information Service, Mr Martin Nesirky, underlined the need for bridging Vienna and New York. IPS is taking the first step in that direction by appointing a correspondent in Vienna.

In honour of the IPS delegation, Ambassador A.L.A. Azeez of Sri Lanka, who chairs the G77 in Vienna, gave a luncheon, which was attended among others by Ambassadors of  Morocco, Saudi Arabia and South Korea, thus providing an opportunity to introduce IPS to these countries’ representatives too.
