Govin Reddy



Govin Reddy is the India Manager of the International Marketing Council of South Africa and Visiting Professor of Journalism at Stellenbosch University. He has been involved in media for almost 30 years, holding several senior executive positions.

In the 1980s he was the Head of the English Service of Inter Press Service in Rome and later become Editor of Africa South magazine in Harare. After a decade in exile during the apartheid years, Mr Reddy returned to South Africa in 1991 and assumed the post of Deputy Director of the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism. In 1994 he was appointed Chief Executive of SABC radio and played a leading role in the transformation of the public broadcaster.

In 1998 Mr Reddy became Chief Executive of the Mail & Guardian. He later moved to Rhodes University as Professor and Director of the Sol Plaatje Media Leadership Institute.

Mr Reddy is a past President of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and has served on the boards of a number of national and international media organizations. In 2003 he was appointed by Parliament to the Board of the Media Development and Diversity Agency. He was also the Project Director of the magazine Vukuzenzele, a government initiative to disseminate information to the rural population of South Africa.

Mr Reddy has presented papers at over 30 international media conferences and has served on the faculty of the Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria. He has been a judge and convenor of several of South Africa’s most prestigious journalism awards.

He holds a Masters degree in African history from Northwestern University in Chicago and studied media management at the Poynter Institute in Florida and the Thomson Foundation in Cardiff.
