Sanjay Suri Sanjay was for four years copy editor and then acting chief sub-editor with the Indian Express, the largest circulated Indian daily at the time, in charge of the production of a national broadsheet. He then moved to reporting, where he was crime reporter and then chief reporter of the Indian Express for two years. In his reporting assignments he covered terrorism in Punjab and Delhi, and human rights issues that arose from it. He travelled extensively in India, taking on several rights issues such as those at a hospital for the mentally challenged in East India, cases of forced blinding in Rajasthan, and the crisis arising from the rioting following the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984. Following his reporting of the violence after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, he challenged several ruling party leaders through petitions and depositions in inquiry commissions. He exposed the abuse of children in Tihar jail in Delhi, one of the biggest prisons in India. That report was turned into a petition by the Supreme Court, which then ordered and enforced lasting reforms in the prison system. As chief reporter he headed a team that produced several milestone reports in Delhi. Sanjay moved to London in 1990 where he was bureau chief and then Europe editor for the Indo-Asian News Service, where he reported at length on the impact of developments and policies in Europe on South Asian countries. He reported on the 9/11 attacks from New York and Washington for Outlook, a leading newsmagazine in India. Since then he has been regional editor with IPS, and has worked with colleagues in the region to build reporting extensively of Iraq right from the invasion through the crisis years to close reporting of the Middle East region currently, besides tracking developments of particular interest to IPS in Europe, and particularly Eastern Europe where vital issues go mostly unreported in the mainstream. He has also been reporting directly on several international issues from the IPS perspective. Sanjay has an M.A. in English literature from the University of Delhi, followed by a second master’s degree in social and organisational psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has also done media studies at Stanford University in California. Sanjay is author of Brideless in Wembley, an account of the immigration experiences of Indians in Britain, one of the largest immigrant communities anywhere. The book has been published both in India and in Britain, and is now going into reprint. It was among six non-fiction books shortlisted for the Crosswords Award in India. It was listed by the travel group as one of the five best books in UK in May 2008. Sanjay also comments occasionally on Indian news channels. Email: ssuri[at]ipsnews.net |
