Our staff is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Agentine poet and former colleague Juan Gelman. This note was circulated among IPS staff on January 14 by our colleague Estrella Gutierrez, following the announcement of Gelman’s death at age 83. In addition to his life as a prolific poet and critic of the Dirty War, Gelman was editor in Chief of IPS in the 1970.

Thalif Deen, UN Bureau Chief for Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency and Regional Director North America, won one of the highest honours for excellence in UN reporting at the annual awards ceremony hosted by the UN Correspondents’ Association (UNCA) in New York.

IPS Africa attended the 17th ICASA Conference on AIDS and STIs held in Cape Town, South Africa, from the 7th to the 11th December.  ICASA is the biggest conference of its kind on the continent, with over 10,000 delegates attending.

As part of the coverage, we produced a daily TerraViva Conference Newsletter which is being emailed to delegates, and is also available on the IPS Africa Web Page www.ipsnews.net/Africa

The Conference was active on Twitter @NoNewHIV using hashtag #ICASA2013 with @ipsafrica contributing to the conversation.

Mario Lubetkin has announced his resignation, after 12 successful years as Director General (DG), effective 7 February 2014. IPS is looking for his successor.

The Director General leads, manages and speaks for IPS globally, guided by the overall strategic direction set by the international Board of Directors, always safeguarding the mission of IPS and its editorial values and integrity. The DG has direct responsibility for the financial, administrative and managerial operations of the global members of the IPS Group, and oversight of the other entities that are managed autonomously. The DG takes the lead role in fundraising with the official, foundation and private sectors to secure the financial health and sustainability of IPS, and manages relations with all its stakeholders.
