Japan ranks among some of the major project partners of IPS. Since April 2009, thanks due to the efforts of IPS Japan, we have been carrying out a media project with the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) on raising awareness for a world free of nuclear weapons. In April 2014, SGI entrusted us with a new project aimed at fostering ‘global citizenship’.

As IPS Japan president Katsuhiro Asagiri launched the final round of negotiations for the first project continuing in the seventh year and the second in the second year, I decided to join him in Tokyo and combine the visit with reporting on the landmark Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) in Sendai, in the centre of Japan’s Tohoku region that bore the brunt of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami leading to the Fukushima nuclear power plant catastrophe.

The visit from March 10 to 20 was rewarding indeed. Not only because we had an opportunity to deepen and strengthen trusted relations with the Soka Gakkai (operating in Japan) and SGI leadership. But also because it enabled us report extensively on the U.N. conference March 14-18 and accompanying civil society events in Sendai.

The SG and SGI leaders in Tokyo and in the Tohoku region assured us of their high regard for IPS and its commitment to giving ‘voice to the voiceless’ as well as for the organisation’s co-founder Roberto Savio, whose struggle to establish IPS in the face of heavy odds had “deeply impressed” them. We conveyed profound appreciation for SG’s and SGI’s continued support to IPS, manifested also in sponsoring the IPS International Achievement Award for Nuclear Disarmament in November 2014.
