JAKARTA – Putting climate change in the context of rural agriculture. Packaging and selling story ideas to editors. Translating policy into stories that affect daily lives. Discussing the need for better understanding of climate change to report better on it.

These were but some of the focus of discussions during the Jun. 4-6, 2013 media training workshop on ‘Reporting Climate Change and Rural Development’, which was held here in Indonesian capital. The workshop, the last of a series by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), was organised by IPS-Inter Press Service and Thomson Reuters Foundation. Read more »

IPS in partnership with Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF), with the support of IFAD, are pleased to inform journalists of its new ‘Rural Poverty Reporting’ training workshop, to be held from June 4 – 6, in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The workshop aims to highlight covering climate change as a development story – by creating a venue both for discussing climate change as a development reality for rural communities, and for discussing it in a newsroom environment in order to tell better, more effective stories around it linked to everyday lives. IPS in partnership with Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) worked with 21 journalists this week in Rome with a training event to coincide with IFAD’s General Council (GC) meeting. Journalists from all over the world joined the training, including participation from Nepal, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal and Burkina Faso. Read more »

As part of an ongoing partnership with IFAD to raise the voices and concerns of smallholder farmers in West and Central Africa, IPS Africa is reporting this week from the IFAD regional forum in Banjul. A bi-lingual English / French TerraViva publication will be shared with all the delegates, telling the stories of young farmers from across the region. Features on new cassava varieties, continuing food security concerns, coffee production, solar power and irrigation schemes, and urban farming are contributed from Yaounde, Dakar, Kampala, Ouagadougou and Abidjan.

Last week 11 journalists from all over Africa attended the Reporting on Rural Poverty and Agriculture workshop in Arusha, Tanzania, which was held in conjunction with the biannual African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF). The workshop was the third in a series of training workshops organised by Inter Press Service – IPS and Thomson Reuters Foundation in a partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), following events in Cairo and Rio de Janeiro earlier this year.

In addition to the training the participants attended a press conference with Kofi Annan and Melinda Gates, reported on keynote speaker Dr. Kanayo F. Nwanze, the President of IFAD, live tweeted from the conference with the hashtag #AGRF2012, and visited two IFAD projects in rural Tanzania. Read more »
