IPS is happy to share with its readers a new, inspiring video recently released by TrustAfrica.
The film features TrustAfrica project “Enhancing Women’s Dignity”, and gives insight on some of the work done to build capacity to curb violence against women and increase women’s political participation. The work is being realised with funds from the Dutch MDG3 Fund.

Lao women artists have been trying to create more space in arts, literature and performance circles for discussion of issues relevant to women, but the path to doing this has not always been easy. Against this backdrop, the recognition that they got in the 2011 artist awards in Laos was a long-awaited one. Video report by Vannaphone Sitthirath for IPS Asia-Pacific.

Tambores de paz comenzaron a reemplazar el sonido de las balas de los
enfrentamientos entre las fuerzas policiales y los narcotraficantes en
el Complexo Alemao, un conjunto de favelas o barrios pobres de Río de Janeiro. Y en este proceso participan activamente las Mujeres de Paz, reclutadas por las autoridades entre líderes comunitarias, que promueven los derechos los derechos de la gente de sus comunidades, en especial de las mujeres, y facilitan alternativas laborales y de formación para los jóvenes en situación vulnerable.
Ahora esas Mujeres de Paz han creado “Radio Mujer, un ambiente comunitario”, una emisora cuyo primer programa: “En las ondas del medio ambiente” les permite hablar de la situación de la favela, de su entorno y de los problemas de las mujeres, como la violencia de género, para aportar soluciones y lograr que la paz llegue también por el dial.

Dieciséis millones de mujeres trabajan fuera de sus hogares en México y constituyen 40 por ciento de la población económicamente activa, según datos oficiales. Detrás de esas cifras persiste una realidad cotidiana de desigualdad salarial, precariedad laboral -con 56 por ciento de las mujeres ocupadas en el sector informal- y agresiones sexuales y psicológicas.
En ese escenario, las microempresas y los proyectos de autogestión son una alternativa fundamental, como demuestra Mitz (Para ti, en lengua náhuatl), una cooperativa de artesanas de Palo Solo, un municipio pobre del extrarradio de la capital del país, que a partir de desechos industriales y con base en una técnica indígena de trenzado, elabora bolsos y otros muchos accesorios, que comercia internacionalmente. Las ganancias permiten sustentar la economía familiar de las participantes y financiar una escuela con unos 2.500 alumnos.
