Ending Impunity for Sexual and GBV, ACORD Conference in Kampala
Posted by sabina on October 22, 2009
ACORD (Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development) in partnership with Action Aid International, Akina Mama wa Afrika, Fahamu, Africa Women’s Development Fund, The Great Lakes Parliamentary Forum on Peace - The Amani Forum and Urgent Action Fund will be holding the Second Regional pan-African Conference on SGBV.
The conference will be held from 26 to 28 October at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda.
This stock-taking conference, themed Due Diligence and Women’s Security: Relocating the Narratives focuses on two key questions that continue to shape development and governance discourse in the continent today; security sector reform and transitional justice. The conference will create platforms for practical and programmatic reflection on how to engage in work around women’s security in a manner more comprehensive than the limited lens of sexual violence.
Through this conference, ACORD and the partners are firmly focused on generating a bolder, systematic and effective response in tackling the seemingly unending violence against women in conflict situations in the Great Lakes Region such as is happening in the DRC, Northern Uganda, Lake Kivu Region and others.
The event will bring together experts in the field of gender and women’s rights, members of parliament, regional and multi lateral organisations, government representatives, civil society activists in the Pan African women’s movement to concretely map out action points to end impunity for SGBV.
The keynote speaker will be Ms. Margaret Sekaggya, UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders. You can find more details on the ACORD website including abstracts by key thematic contributors as a well as a copy of the programme of activities.
