IPS, civil society's leading news agency, is an independent
voice from the South and for development, delving into globalisation
for the stories underneath.
The
core activity of IPS is a global news agency producing independent
news and analysis about events and global processes affecting
the economic, social and political development of peoples
and nations, especially in the South. IPS is the news agency
of Civil Society and the South, Development Issues, The Globalisation
Process and of the People Excluded from It.
The
flagship World Service of the agency presently covers over
150 countries. The service is produced in English
and Spanish,
with selected stories translated into French,
German,
Finnish,
Dutch, Swedish,
Japanese,
Portuguese,
Thai, Mandarin, Nepali andKiswahili.
The daily output is currently around 112000 words.
IPS coverage is
focused on developing regions of the globe, but within the
context of globalisation and its impacts. The stories cover
topics like economy, politics, human rights and democratisation,
environment and development. Strengthening the gender perspective
in all IPS stories, and giving a voice to minorities and under-represented
groups are editorial priorities.
The content of IPS World Service is written
and edited from the perspective of the developing world. The
overwhelming majority of the contributing journalists and
editors are from developing countries, including those reporting
from Europe, North America and Japan.
This figure does not include individuals who
access the IPS editorial services through the Association
for Progressive Communications (APC), OneWorld, Third World
Network websites and Yahoo among many others who partner or
pick-up IPS news for their web-sites.
IPS produces a daily fax and email digest of
top stories for policy-makers and decision-takers all over
the world.

viewpoints.

and in Mumbai during theWorld
Social Forum in January 2004.
Through
its links to hundreds of media organisations throughout the
world and to its much-visited web site, IPS has also been
an invaluable source for disseminating the message of conferences
to a huge global audience.
Selected IPS stories are repackaged for
radio in a daily or weekly basis and distributed by radio
stations and partner radio networks, notably in Southern Africa
and Latin America. The Latin American environmental project
Tierramerica wires a weekly radio programme broadcast by hundreds
of community, commercial and cultural stations, available
in the site www.tierramerica.net;
IPS Africa produces the Rip and Read Radio Service, available

Lama, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, Liljana Kornilova and
others. The columns are bought by hundreds of media clients
in the North and the South.
IPS carries out a very wide range of projects,
internationally and regionally, usually with other communication
and development partners. Some examples are highlighted below.
See the page on projects
and programmes for more information.
Tierramérica Tierramérica
is the most important communications platform about environment
and sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean,
targeting opinion leaders and decision-makers in the public
and private arenas, and civil society.
It's a cooperative
project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with IPS
serving as the executive agency, and associated to the Central
American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD)
and the World Bank regarding the Central American chapter.

a weekly page published in 24 newspapers in 14 countries;
an interactive web-site at www.tierramerica.net;
a weekly radio programme broadcast by community, commercial
and cultural stations; information bulletins to thousands
of development and environment policy and decision-makers.
Gender
Rights and HIV/AIDS Recognising
that gender is a key factor in understanding and tackling the
causes and impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, IPS
launched a multi-media programme in June 2001.
With a core
product of news features researched and written by the professional
network of IPS journalists in every region of the world, the
work further encompasses training for journalists, networking
with civil society and producing a training manual for the
media, along with the wide dissemination of the information
to media and civil society, particularly in Africa, the continent
most affected by the pandemic.
Magazine
for International Cooperation 'KOMMUNIKATION
GLOBAL - COMMUNICATE WORLDWIDE' - is the name of a monthly
Magazine for International Cooperation, published by IPS EUROPA
| IPS EUROPE.
The magazine
was launched in August 2000 as part of a project funded by
the state government of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW). The
magazine carries articles in English and German on several
aspects of international cooperation in a globalising world.
On
the Asian Migration Trail The media project 'On
the Asian Migration Trail' follows the human side of the
migration phenomenon - the under-reported aspects of the issue
that often take the backseat to reportage focusing on the
economic or labou value of migrant workers.
This initiative by IPS Asia-Pacific, with
support from Ford Foundation, aims to generate awareness,
debate and analysis of migration issues through media in Asia,
with particular focus on reproductive health and gender, and
the social, emotional costs of migrating for work.
Globalization
Insights result of a joint project of
the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) with IPS EUROPE
consists of down-to-earth feature stories written by journalists
from all over the world. In their stories a diverse group
of mostly young journalists from Africa, Asia and Latin America
has written about the perceptions and experiences of people
as globalization unfolds in their environs. It contains 25
stories which provide a unique kaleidoscope of today’s
globalised world. Three of the finest stories written
up by journalists from Nigeria, Mexico and Yemen were
chosen for a public presentation of Globalization Insights
at the Embassy of Canada in Berlin on 12 May 2005.
World
Social Forum IPS has had an outstanding
presence at the World Social Forums (WSF) both through the
production of the TerraViva daily, the Forum's independent
newspaper, and the WSF
independent journalistic site produced jointly with Le
Monde Diplomatique.
At the same
time, and in its capacity as a communications NGO, IPS coordinated
some of the main debates in this strategic sector and organized
special Seminars with other NGOs in the communications field.
Acting as a bridge to other actors, like the World Economic
Forum, is another important facet of this engagement, to construct
spaces for dialogue.
Media
Watch Global IPS
joined with Le Monde Diplomatique to launch Media Watch Global
(MWG) in Porto Alegre in January 2003. MWG is an international
organisation dedicated to the support of fairness and accuracy
in the world of information. This initiative speaks directly
to the communication rights of journalists and citizens and
is a part of the IPS response to the present climate for news-gathering
and sharing.
Partnerships On-line communication partnerships
have been encouraging. For example, IPS is reviewing its existing
agreement with OneWorld to strengthen its presence in the
Yahoo Internet portal. IPS is also working on an agreement
with Panos for a new photographic service and to strengthen
cooperation on HIV/AIDS reporting in Africa.
