“Like humans, large animal groups can use decision-making processes to overcome their individual differences and reach a kind of ‘democratic’ consensus,” says Alex Thorntonof the University of Exeter.

Previous studies had investigated consensus decision-making in animal groups that were relatively small or made up of family members, he explained. What struck them about the jackdaw roosts was their sheer size. Not only are their groups large, they also include individuals of different ages, sexes, family groups, and colonies all spread across the treetops.

It’s not likely that all those different individuals would just naturally prefer to take off at precisely the same moment. And, yet, sticking together has advantages, such as reducing the risk of predation and giving individuals information from their peers about where to find food. The researchers wanted to explore how the birds decide when it is time to go.

To look more closely, Thornton and colleagues, including first author Alex Dibnah, recorded hours and hours of audio and video of six different jackdaw roosts in Cornwall, U.K. over the course of the winter months. The size of the roosts varied from 160 to almost 1,500 individuals. They quantified the intensity of the birds’ calls leading up to and right after they took off in flight.

The evidence shows that the timing of departure is tightly linked to calling intensity within the roost. While on some mornings, the birds left in a stream of small groups over about 20 minutes, most of the time they set out in mass departures, with hundreds of birds taking off within about 4 seconds of each other.

On most mornings, they found that calling intensity increased over the hour before the biggest group departure. It sometimes got delayed by rain or heavy cloud cover. They concluded that changes in calling intensity could serve as a reliable source of information, enabling the birds to synchronize their daily takeoffs.

To confirm cause and effect, the researchers played the sounds of conspecifics calling to them to see if they could get the birds to take off earlier than they otherwise would have. And they found that they could. By adding calls into the mix, the birds took flight an average of about 6.5 minutes earlier.

“Through their calls, jackdaws appear to effectively signal their willingness to leave, providing large groups with a means of achieving consensus to perform cohesive, collective departures from the roost,” the researchers write.

They say the observational data indicate that consensus is achieved as the intensity of calls build to a point that triggers them to act. The playback experiments help to show a causal link between calling intensity and takeoff. Together, they offer new insight into the ways that animals make decisions about mass movements in nature.

It is also notable that, on the few occasions when the intensity of calling did not build up sufficiently, the birds apparently failed to reach consensus. As a result, they took off in “dribs and drabs” instead of all at once.

In future studies, researchers hope to learn more about how human activities may affect these dynamics.

“As human impacts on wildlife grow, we are very interested in understanding to understand whether and how human disturbance — for instance, from light and noise pollution — may affect animal groups’ abilities to communicate and reach consensus decisions,” Thornton says.

This research was supported by the Swedish Research Council, the Human Frontier Science Program, the Whitten Lectureship in Marine Biology, the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellowship, and a Severo Ochoa Postdoctoral grant through the Spanish Program for Centres of Excellence.

This material intended for developers is intended to accelerate the development of the computing ecosystem of tomorrow, where artificial intelligence will play the leading roles.

Microsoft surprised audiences at its annual developer conference; once is not custom, the firm took the opportunity to unveil hardware during this event largely focused on the software side. She thus took the time to present her Project Volterra, a machine which is however no stranger to this universe since it is intended for developers who work on ARM platforms.

Without going into detail, the acronym ARM designates a computer architecture. In essence, it is a set of rules and procedures that define the functions and organization of a computer system. Some of these machines, including the majority of modern consumer PCs, are for example built on the basis of chips developed from an architecture called x64; this is the case with consumer chips fromIntel and AMD.

ARM-based processors, on the other hand, often power lighter devices; today, they are regularly found in sensors, connected devices of the type IoT Where “wearables“, And so on. But they can also equip small computers like the famous raspberry-pia whole bunch of smartphones… or this new Volterra.

An ARM PC with a Snapdragon and a dedicated AI subunit

At present, Microsoft has already revealed that the device would be entitled to a chip Snapdragon from Qualcomm. The exact model, on the other hand, remains secret, as does the rest of the data sheet. On the other hand, an interesting element was nevertheless reported by TechCrunch; it appears that the chip in question will embed a sub-unit specially dedicated to AI called NPUfor Neural Processing Unit.

This is something not traditionally found on consumer PCs. On the other hand, it is already found on many models of smartphones; these NPUs are responsible, for example, for AI applications linked to the photo processing or battery management.

This philosophy works exceedingly well. She is directly responsible for a much of the dazzling progress of smartphones over recent years. Many observers therefore expect them to become commonplace in the future.

Moreover, this transition has already started. Just take a look at Apple; if its M1 chip has proven to be so exceptional in terms of power and energy consumption, it is largely thanks to its dedicated NPU, the very first to play such an important role on a device of this type. There is also an NPU on Microsoft’s Surface Pro X.

The dedicated NPU is one of the main arguments of Apple’s exceptional M1 chip.. and soon of all other computers?. © Apple

Soon AI hardware on all processors?

For the competition, it is therefore a question of preparing for this major shift as best as possible. And that is precisely the raison d’être of Volterra. “We expect NPUs to be integrated into most, if not all, computing devices of tomorrow.”, affirms Panos Panay, product manager at Microsoft. “We are therefore making it easier for developers to access these new features by directly integrating end-to-end NPU support on Windows platforms.”, he explains.

In addition to this new ARM platform, the company is also preparing the sound transformation software ecosystem. For example, the Visual Studio development suite and the Windows Terminal will soon be able to run natively on ARM platforms. Compatibility of all Azure services and the .NET platform will also be ensured.

The message is clear: Microsoft does not intend to let the competition dominate this very promising side without reacting. It will therefore be interesting to see if this proof-of-concept platform will meet its audience. Because Volterra could well become the first representative of a new approach to traditional computing at Microsoft, with potentially significant transformations of the computing ecosystem as we know it today. Redmond’s troops still have a lot of work to do to catch up with its main competitors in this segment, but it is unquestionably something to follow!

news culture Obi-Wan Kenobi: The actors leaving for a season 2, the president of Lucasfilm answers

It is this Friday that the Obi-Wan Kenobi mini-series will be available on Disney+, after a long wait tinged with excitement. With six episodes, this new development of the Star Wars license will allow fans to find the Jedi, but also Darth Vader.

We’ve known for a long time that Ewan McGregor will be back as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Hayden Christensen, the previously unloved actor playing Anakin Skywalker, will be back in Darth Vader’s armor.

After the Empire’s victory, discretion and cunning are in order

The series takes place 10 years later Revenge of the Sith, at a time when the Empire hunts down the last Jedi through an Inquisition, and when Obi-Wan watches over Luke from afar, despite Owen Lars’ animosity towards him. The main idea of the series is to tell the story of Obi-Wan since his failure in the face of Anakin’s tipping, until his apparent appeasement from Episode IV. However, Obi-Wan is an extremely popular character, and Hayden Christensen won back the love of fanswho no longer hesitate to support him in his role as Vader.

Is a season 2 for the mini-series possible?

As well, we wonder if Disney and Lucasfilm would not be tempted by the idea of continuing the adventure. But more than production, these are obviously all the people involved, including the actorswho would have expressed their desire to see a season 2 come to life. Desires that have reached the ears of Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, recently interviewed by Entertainment Weekly. And even though Obi-Wan Kenobi was meant to be a self-sufficient miniseries, the door is not fully closed about a sequel:

It is indeed something to be considered. Ewan had a great time. Hayden (Christensen) too. So indeed, everyone involved would like it not to end there. The only question worth asking is “Why should we do it?” she indicates.

For his part, Ewan McGregor was extremely enthusiasticeven if he immediately tempers his own ardorand ours at the same time:

Would I like to do one more season? Seriously, I would love that! It was designed as a mini-series. And, in a sense, it does the job very well, in my opinion, of building a bridge between Chapters III and IV, bringing me a little closer to the version of Obi-Wan played by Alec Guinness in A New Hope (the episode IV, editor’s note).

A whole temporality to explore, and several series in approach

An analysis joined by Joby Haroldscreenwriter of the series, who evokes this evolution of the character and this goal of link two trilogies separated by almost 20 years. To give an idea, between the release of episode IV and that of episode III, 32 years have passed. Now all you have to do is wait for the episodes to be released on Disney+.

As a reminder, we will be entitled to two episodes this Friday, May 27, then one episode per week for the next month. Then, we will have to wait for the third season of The Mandalorian, the new season of The Bad Batch, the series on Ahsoka or even that on Cassian Andor. As for the cinema, we await news of the film Rogue Squadron, and of the new “trilogy” of Rian Johnson.

Designing a pretty site isn’t just for IT pros anymore. You don’t even have to hire an outside agency to create a website anymore. Indeed, for a few years now, web platforms like Zyro have given you all the cards in hand to succeed in your site creation project simply and in no time.

Zyro is a European service provider that offers a “turnkey” solution for designing a website, a blog and even an online store. Zyro has two major advantages over its competitors: its use does not require any specific digital knowledge and the prices of its subscriptions are very affordable. This is all the more true at the moment, with the additional 3 months offered for free.

To take advantage of it, just click on the link below:

How Zyro Creates a Site in Under an Hour

Zyro is a very well thought out site creation platform, especially for computer novices. Its ease of use is such that it is possible to put your site online in less than an hour. It’s quite amazing since in general it takes time to become familiar with this type of platform.

The first step is to create an account by selecting a package from the three available (see details further down in this article). It will take you less than five minutes.

You will then be asked to choose a template (site model) from the many available in order to start customizing it. If the templates are a very good basis for work and inspiration, know that they are 100% modifiable according to your desires and your needs. Moreover, Zyro templates have the particularity of being designed by design professionals. This explains the quality and aesthetics of the latter.

© Zyro

You can also turn to its smart builder. The latter will take care of designing a site adapted to your project and your preferences following a few questions. It is therefore a tailor-made solution that will save you even more time. It’s interesting if you have no notion in the web or specific expectation to start. Zyro will offer you a suitable design, but of course you can modify it.

Whether you opted for the predefined template or the smart builder, it barely takes about ten minutes. It’s the creation and customization stage that takes a little longer. Fortunately, with the very intuitive tool developed by Zyro, it’s child’s play. The editor interface is clean and well-designed. It should also be noted that Zyro is translated into French, which is not the case for all platforms of this type. So there will be no confusion for anyone when creating a site.

Create a website with Zyro

The navigation menu on the left allows you to add elements to the page of your site in a few clicks (texts, images, geolocation map, contact form, subscription to the newsletter, etc.) and to see the changes in real time on the preview window. Of course, the default font can be modified, as well as the colors and layout of each block.

Editor-site-Zyro

Test of the Zyro site editor © Lemon Squeezer

As the editor works on the principle of drag and drop, getting started is very quick and manipulations are very simple. When you are satisfied with the result, just click on the publish button and your site will already be visible on the Internet. This step lasts an average of thirty minutes.

Zyro, more than a site builder

Zyro wanted to make site creation easy and fast. For this, he bet on an ergonomic editor, but also on many tools based on artificial intelligence. All are made available to users free of charge. For example, there is a thermal attention map, which allows you to know where the visitor’s gaze is concentrated. This is the best way to optimize the layout of your site.

Zyro also offers a content generator for those who are less comfortable with writing. This tool offers quality texts related to the activity or category you are entering. You can directly copy and paste the text into your site or make corrections if necessary. Anyway, it’s a great help when you’re just starting out.

Finally, Zyro differentiates itself by offering a logo creator so that you can build your brand image from the launch of your site.

But there’s more to Zyro than creating. It also allows you to manage your site and develop your business from an optimized back office including all the necessary sections. Two independent analyzes and reported by Apple show that the iOS app economy now supports more than 2.2 million jobs in the United States and that revenues for small US developers have increased by 118% over the past two years. In France, we are talking about 300,000 new jobs.

2.2 million jobs in Europe

Apple is proud of it, the iOS application ecosystem continued to be a real engine for growth in 2021 and created many opportunities for French developers. It has created more than 300,000 jobs in the country. Across Europe, the iOS application ecosystem is growing, creating 2.2 million jobs, an increase of 7% since last year.

The figures come from two new studies showing the usefulness of the ecosystem of the apple manufacturer to help create new companies, innovate and reach consumers during the pandemic, but also to recruit in the field of code, design and creation.

Ultimately, this sector currently contributes to one of the fastest growing and most innovative global markets.

apple app store developers growth 2021

France is progressing faster

In detail, the revenues of the small structures already present in the App Store in 2019 have increased by 113% over the last two years, more than double the growth of the largest structures. In France, these small structures, those that are defined as earning up to a million dollars a year and with less than a million annual downloads, have seen their profits increase by 122% since 2019, the strongest growth within the developer community in all countries.

All these studies show not only that more companies have been innovating and using apps to stay in touch with their customers over the past two years, but also that these changes in digital and hybrid models have persisted in many country, even after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Developers and their apps have thus offered new and sustainable ways to collaborate, have fun, express creativity and stay in touch with loved ones.

2.2 million jobs also in the USA

Last year, the iOS app economy confirmed its role as a driver of economic growth and opportunity, supporting more than 2.2 million jobs in the United States and helping small businesses grow. This information comes from the same research analyzes cited above.

A new analysis, titled “Spotlight on Small Business & App Creators on the App Store” – by independent economists at Analysis Group – has revealed that developer revenue has increased significantly over the past two years. While earnings for all developers grew, revenue for small developers active on the App Store in 2019 increased 113% over the past two years – more than doubling the earnings growth of large developers. In the United States, these small developers, defined as those earning up to $1 million per year and having less than one million annual downloads, have seen an above-average increase in revenue of 118% since 2019.

Additionally, a separate new analysis from the Progressive Policy Institute sheds light on job creation in the iOS app economy. This research examines how the iOS app economy has helped create millions of jobs – ranging from software development, to sales, to designers, and more.

Taken together, this research demonstrates that as more businesses have used apps to reach customers in innovative ways over the past two years, these digital and hybrid shifts have endured even as COVID-related restrictions have been lifted in many parts of the world. These developers and their apps have helped people find new and often sustainable ways to collaborate with colleagues, be entertained, hone their creativity, and connect with friends and family.

The new ones are from Europe and China

Finally, on the subject of application creators, the new arrivals in 2021 are distributed as follows:
24% came from Europe, 23% from China, 14% from the United States, 4.3% from Japan and 34% from other regions, including Korea, India and Brazil. And over the past two years, the number of small emerging developers joining the App Store has increased – for example, in the UK, the number of small developers new to the App Store has increased by almost 40% since 2019 , and in Germany it increased by more than 25%.

Finally, the study reveals that 45% of today’s major developers were not present on the App Store, or had less than $10,000 in revenue, just five years ago.

Video games: Mobile overtakes PC and consoledata.ai (formerly App Annie) released today, in partnership with IDC, the Gaming Spotlight 2022 report. Conducted by Game IQ, the report reveals that mobile games account for 61% of the overall gaming market, which is expected to reach $222 billion in 2022. !

The report reveals that mobile games are expected to exceed $136 billion in 2022, growing 1.7 times faster than the overall games market. Globally, users downloaded 45% more mobile games per week in the first quarter of 2021 compared to pre-pandemic levels, reaching over 1.1 billion games per week. In Q1 2022, consumers spent more than $1.6 billion per week on mobile games on iOS and Google Play, a 30% increase from pre-pandemic levels.

Selected conclusions include:

Mobile is democratizing the space and is now the main driver of growth in the consumption of digital games. We’re seeing more diversity in game genres, allowing publishers to serve new gamers of all generations and genders“,
said Lexi Sydowhead of market research at data.ai.

From the perspective of mobile in-game advertising, the results of our U.S. Gamer Survey from late last year suggest that studios and publishers should emphasize videos and rewarded playables, and that contextual player data will become increasingly important over time as Apple, Google, other vendors and regulators in several key countries prioritize the privacy and security of customer data“,
said Lewis Warddirector of games and VR/AR, IDC.

In their new article, “Expert Perspectives on the Wind Plant of the Future,” which appears in the journal Wind Energy, the researchers find that experts expect the height of wind turbines to increase even greater than previously forecast, with plants located increasingly in less favorable wind and siting regions.

Taller turbines, and their accompanying larger rotor diameters, allow for the capture of more energy. In the most-likely scenario, the experts predicted that hub height for newly installed onshore wind turbines will reach 130 meters in 2035, rather than the 115-meter forecast offered in a 2015 survey. (Each survey asked experts to look 15 years into the future, so the 2015 data offers predictions for 2030).

Experts expect plant sizes of 1,100 megawatts (MW) for fixed-bottom and 600 MW for floating offshore wind. These and many other design choices discussed in the article can support levelized cost of energy reductions of 27% (onshore) and 17%-35% (floating and fixed-bottom offshore) by 2035 compared to today. New plant designs can also enhance wind energy’s grid service, for example, via project hybridization with batteries and hydrogen production.

“Our research provides a much-needed benchmark for representing future wind technologies in power sector models,” Beiter said. “By explaining the economics behind wind energy design choices, this article addresses a critical research gap.”

The authors identify economic mechanisms that drive these design changes, including economies of scale from larger turbines, larger plant size, and greater siting flexibility. In essence, these mechanisms drive design choices because the value from reduced costs or higher energy production exceed the incremental expense to obtain them.

“While well established in broader economic theory and often addressed individually, relatively few efforts have systematically investigated the exact mechanisms driving wind plant design,” Lantz said about the unique contribution of the study.

The comprehensive global expert survey was made possible through an international research partnership under the auspices of the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Programme, whose mission is to advance wind energy research, development, and deployment in its member countries.

The Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office funded the research.

The new version of the platform was unveiled by the San Francisco publisher. Combining in particular MLOps, DataOps and observability, its functionalities will be gradually launched in the coming months.

[Mise à jour le mercredi 25 mai à 17h04] GitLab has officially lifted the veil on version 15 of its DevOps platform. The novelties of this new version will be gradually launched in the coming months (see thea roadmap on the publisher’s website). A large part of them are centered on artificial intelligence. In the program : the integration of the concept of MLOps with the management of the entire chain of machine learning (ML), from the training of the models to their deployment through their testing. To build the training datasets, GitLab will implement an infrastructure for extracting, loading and transforming data. Downstream, a monitoring console will be delivered to drive the ML life cycle, as well as a traceability system integrating source code security, model version management, as well as access control management and collaboration of data scientists. GitLab also insists on improvements to its platform in terms of observability. In this area, he plans in particular “to unify error tracking, metrics, logs and traces within a single code monitoring solution”. Other developments in sight : a series of new security features, notably around zero-trust, source scans, software supply chain management, access policies…

GitLab, what is it?

GitLab is an open source collaborative development platform published by the American company of the same name. It covers all the steps of DevOps. Based on the functionalities of the Git software, it allows you to control source code repositories and manage their different versions. Its use is particularly indicated for developers who wish to have a reactive and accessible tool.

GitLab claims more than 100,000 organizations using its platform around the world. Which represents a total of more than 30 million registered users.

Open source, the application is the subject of community development. According to the GitLab company, 3,000 contributors collaborate in its evolution. In France, the San Francisco company claims several customer references. This is the case of the aircraft manufacturer Airbusof the’European Space Agencyof the ESN Sopra Steriae-merchant VeePee or the payment expert Worldline.

The interface of GitLab remains very similar to that from GitHub. However, GitLab offers options that are less practical:

For ergonomic use, GitLab is located on a virtual machine, itself hosted on a web server. This collaborative platform tool is based on a database. The administration interface, in particular for the creation of user accounts, requires an online configuration.

What is GitLab CI?

GitLab CI/CD is a GitLab tool designed to manage the continuous integration and deployment of application code and revisions. GitLab CI/CD goes through the configuration of a file called .gitlab-ci.yml placed in the root directory. A file that generates a pipeline executing code changes within the code repository.

What is a GitLab Runner?

Gitlab-runner is the application for running tasks in a GitLab CI/CD pipeline. If installing Gitlab-runner locally, it is recommended to deploy it on a separate machine from the one hosting the GitLab instance, both for performance and security reasons. Each must be equipped with its own software stack: OS, Kubernetes, Docker…

What are GitLab Pages used for?

GitLab Pages allow you to publish static websites directly from a GitLab repository. Usable with any static site generator, they can be used to present development projects managed through GitLab.

Available from the free offer, GitLab Pages can be hosted on GitLab.com or on a dedicated GitLab instance. It is possible to associate your own domain name and assign them a TLS encryption certificate.

Is GitLab free?

GitLab is free for open source development projects (under MIT license). In this configuration, the service can run up to 400 minutes of continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines per month, and drives all DevOps steps.

What is the price of GitLab?

Alongside its free offer, GitLab offers two paid plans: GitLab Premium for $19 per user per month, and GitLab Ultimate for $99 per user per month. The first includes advanced CI/CD features: control dashboard, GitLab agent for Kubernetes, multi-project management… The second includes additional compliance management and security testing features. While GitLab Premium allows running up to 10,000 minutes of CI/CD pipelines per month, GitLab Ultimate bumps that level up to 50,000 minutes.

It is possible to subscribe to additional capacities if necessary. GitLab prices 1000 extra CI/CD minutes at $10, and $60 per year for 10 GB of storage.

GitLab presents itself as an alternative to GitHub. Its installation can be done locally or via a web server. It is even possible to go through a virtual machine, itself based on an online server.

GitLab vs. GitHub

If GitHub can come close toa social network specialized, GitLab presents itself more as free software. The two collaborative platforms are distinguished by their respective services and functionalities. GitLab makes it possible to maintain a certain independence vis-à-vis the structure and tends to increase its offer. GitHub benefits from a larger community and more flexible plans for private directory subscriptions.

Does GitLab integrate with GitHub?

Not only does GitLab integrate with GitHub, but it offers the ability to run its continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines from any external Git repository from any vendor.

To facilitate its integration with GitHub, GitLab has developed GitLab CI/CD for GitHub. This brick allows you to directly connect a CI/CD project created in GitLab to a GitHub code repository. It automatically configures repository synchronization (via pull mirroring), webhook push to GitLab CI/CD triggers as soon as code is committed, and GitHub update in return.

GitLab API

To benefit from the documentation of API of GitLab, the company offers a online documentationas well as’search engine to unearth answers to more specific technical questions.

Redmine vs. GitLab

GitLab is a built software platform based on Git. Developed by GitLab Inc, it covers bug tracking, continuous integration and continuous delivery (IC/CD). Domains on which Redmine is not present. Just to manage access management to source code repositories, the latter must use third-party tools.

On the other hand, Redmine allows you to create, customize and orchestrate allocation and event management processes (bugs, defects, etc.) via a console called trackers. Via its problem management systemGitLab does not currently offer the same degree of customization.

GitLab and Docker

Free software Docker launches applications in software containers. For the use of GitLab, its integration makes it possible to automate certain functionalities when sending your source code. For example, it can perform unit tests, send notifications and install “npm install” type dependencies.

GitLab also has a GitLab agent for the Kubernetes container orchestrator, which allows it to apply its CI/CD pipeline to Kubernetes clusters.

In recent years, online gambling has become a favorite target of hackers. It drains, in fact, millions of users, eager to succeed and sometimes unconcerned about their security. In addition, online gambling generates an ever-increasing turnover and gives the opportunity for multiple transactions which are as many opportunities for hackers to steal banking data. Fortunately, there are ways to effectively protect yourself from hackers when playing online. Here are 5 important tips to follow below to enjoy your online sessions with peace of mind.

Online gaming: a prime target for hackers

Between 2019 and 2020, the attacks on gaming companies online have grown by 340%, and the numbers for 2021 are also looking very strong. Not only do hackers target these companies to steal the source code of certain games as happened at Electronic Artsbut they also try to steal players’ identities, passwords and bank details.

Today, online PC games allow gamers to use real money to buy valuable character upgrades or game expansions. This financial windfall is highly coveted: it makes every online gamer a potential victim of hackers.

Indeed, these attack not only gaming companies and their online platforms, but also the people who connect to them. The slightest weakness is then exploited to penetrate the devices of online players and attempt to steal very valuable data.

Another way cybercriminals target gamers is through malware disguised as an advantage. Cheating software for online games is common as players strive to be the best they can be. Malefactors also try to lure them with pirated and free versions of the most popular games. These tricks are all pernicious means of luring online gamers to malicious sites and hacking them.

The 5 actions to take to protect yourself when playing online

To guard against the risks inherent in online gambling, there are 5 golden rules to follow to stay safe from hackers.

Do not disclose your personal information

Many online gamers use variations of their real names and birthdates in their usernames. This is a mistake that can be very expensive, because hackers can collect this information to eventually complete their data on your profile and impersonate you. It is always preferable to use user names that have nothing to do with your first name, last name, date of birth, place of residence or other and on the contrary to use a pseudonym or a sequence of random characters.

Do not hack games or download software to cheat

Be especially wary of free game downloads, pirated versions and cheats, as they are very often distributed by hackers. They will take advantage of your connection to their systems to infect your devices, steal your personal data or set up a ransom.

Protect yourself with a VPN

Using a VPN has become essential for online gaming. Not only a vpn makes your connection anonymous and prevents potential hackers from finding you, but all the data you exchange is encrypted. They are therefore unreadable for any hackers who might see them.

A VPN is a very small investment compared to the possible cost of ramsonware, loss of personal data or worse, theft of banking data when paying online.

Use antivirus software for games

Antivirus software for gaming not only makes your online gaming experience more secure, but it can also improve the performance of your platform! There are many powerful tools that detect threats live via the cloud and optimize resources to have a good fluidity on the screen.

Playing online without good antivirus software means running a significant risk of being attacked or targeted by web hackers who will then find it easy to infect your device.

Opt for multi-factor authentication and strong passwords

There are two methods that can work together to ensure secure access to your online player accounts. The first is of course to choose a strong password. That is to say, consisting of a good number of characters, letters and numbers, special characters and capital letters. Avoid easy-to-remember passwords and above all, refrain from using the same passwords for multiple accounts.

Do you suffer from slow internet speed at home? Since we spend more and more time at home, many connectivity problems can appear, especially when several people live under the same roof.

Connectivity drops, bottlenecks, delays in uploading and downloading content are common problems with home internet services, and it may not be your provider’s fault.

Here are the reasons why your internet may be slow, and solutions to fix it.

1. Assess your bandwidth

If you constantly have speed issues, your bandwidth is the first thing to consider.

Make sure you have a plan that can handle all of today’s devices and their bandwidth demands. A minimum speed of 30 Mb/s is recommended.

Generally, you will need more bandwidth if you have multiple devices and streaming services in use. Your internet service provider may have imposed a limitation on your service if you are considered to be using “too much” bandwidth – if this is the case you will need to call your service provider. You may also need to renegotiate your plan, upgrade it, or, if you’re not getting a good deal, switch providers altogether.

2. Check your speed

If you already have a broadband plan and there is no reason for you to suffer from slow speed because of what you pay, go to the ZDNet speedtest or on Speedtest.net and Fast.com for real-time analysis of your connection. These free services will ping and check your download and upload speeds.

If you pay for a plan of up to 30 Mbps and only receive speeds of 2 or 3 Mbps, for example, it may be an issue with your internet service provider (ISP). At this stage, it is useful to check with your supplier if there is an outage in the area. To do this, simply type the name of your ISP and the word “outage” into a search engine or visit its website. You can also ask your neighbors if they have any problems.

Flickering lights on your router can also indicate a problem outside your home, such as with cables or junction boxes.

However, if it’s just a specific online service you’re having trouble with, go to Down for everyone or just me, type the address and check if your slow speed or domain login failure is a 3rd party issue or failure. Sometimes the inability to access web domains is not the fault of your service, but rather of ISPs or Content Delivery Networks (CDNs). For example, Fastly made large swaths of the web inaccessible due to an outage in June 2021.

3. Reset your router

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. If your connection speed suffers, try unplugging your router, leaving it turned off for about 10 seconds, then restarting it. In the same way that a PC sometimes needs a refresh, routers sometimes need it too.

4. Check the location of your router

There are two general categories of hardware used to connect your home: a traditional router or a mesh network (unless you are relying on a mobile device and 3G/4G/5G cellular setup).

Traditional routers act as a central hub to connect you to your ISP. These routers handle traffic through a single access point.

In comparison, mesh networks are newcomers to the market that create a network of nodes for internet access. Instead of each home device connecting to a router, these products include a hub and nodes that can be spread across different areas of your home, and devices connect to the nearest physical node to access the web.

If you’re using traditional hardware, like a default router provided by your ISP, you should remember that the further away you are, the greater the risk of connection issues, slow speeds, and dropouts. A simple solution is to move your router – perhaps closer to your office – or invest in a Wi-Fi extender to increase signal strength.

Certain objects can also interfere with connections between your devices and a router. Whenever possible, try to keep clutter around your router to a minimum.

5. Consider a mesh network

Large properties or home offices located in a garden or yard may simply not be serviced by a centralized internet hub. If so, moving your router won’t be enough, and it might be time to consider a mesh network instead.

Both categories can offer reasonable speeds, but mesh networks tend to sacrifice a bit of speed for better connectivity. If you need high-speed direct connections for streaming, gaming, and power-hungry business applications, upgrading your standard router is a worthwhile investment and will likely perform better than a network install. The default router typically provided by an ISP may simply not meet the bandwidth needs of today’s homes.

It’s also worth noting that you can combine a router with a LAN cable if you want a stable and fast connection for a PC in a room, as well as wireless connectivity in general.

It is also useless to subscribe to a broadband internet plan if your old equipment cannot support it. So you also need to consider the age of your router if lags are an issue.

6. Check your wiring

The cabling connecting your router to a switch, phone jack, or PC is something that can be overlooked, but can cause connectivity or speed issues. If your wires are old, you may consider refreshing them and replacing the old ADSL/Ethernet wires and see if that fixes the problem.

7. Find the hijackers

If you are suffering from slowness, it may be because someone else is hijacking your internet subscription. Routers usually come with a random password set by default and printed on a sticker on your router, but if you’ve changed your password to something easy to guess, you’re using an insecure protocol, or you have an open Wi-Fi hotspot, you risk other people using your network without your consent.

To lock your connection or change your password, go to your router’s configuration page in a browser. You will need to check the specific router address from your provider or do a Google search with your router type, which should provide you with the address you need to access the router settings and hunt unwanted users.

8. Switch to a less crowded channel

Wi-Fi channels make it easy to send and receive data. Bottlenecks can form when you have too many connections, slowing your broadband. Depending on the channels used by your router, you may be able to switch to less congested traffic lanes.

There are different apps android and iOS to easily scan your Wi-Fi channels and reveal which devices are connected to your network. To change channels, log into your router’s configuration page and select the channel you want from the available options.

9. Try another VPN location

Many of us work from home, and companies may require you to use a virtual private network (VPN) to access company resources securely.

You can either subscribe to a VPN as a paid customer or opt for a free service. Paid options are generally faster, but can still slow down your internet, as you’re using a relay for traffic – and if the VPN service is used at peak times, there can also be congestion.

A quick fix is often to try a different location option offered by your VPN: for example, London users connected to a New York server can try using another server located in the UK. However, not all VPNs are created equal, and there can be substantial differences in the speeds offered.

Free VPNs are generally not recommended because, in exchange for free access, there is always a trade-off – whether it’s security, your personal data or speed. If you are using a free VPN and the low speed is intolerable, you should consider subscribing to a paid service.

10. Check for Malware

But the slowness of your internet connection may have nothing to do with your hardware or service provider. If your computer has been infected with malware, malware, or adware, the program may be throttling overall performance by using memory reserves. Run a virus scan to make sure. Among the suspicious behaviors to watch out for are unwanted pop-ups in large numbers, changing your default search engine, and redirects to unusual websites.

11. Check your background usage

Finally, some very resource-intensive or streaming mobile applications and PC programs can consume the bandwidth you need without you realizing it. Close any software you don’t need to be active.
