He was probably Donald Rumsfeld’s single closest adviser, as well as the Pentagon’s intelligence czar, who, among other things, reportedly helped determine how prisoners were treated at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, etc. and who also set up a special unit within the Pentagon to run what were essentially covert operations abroad without notifying the in-country U.S. ambassadors or the CIA. To the great relief of many on Capitol Hill, as well as the intelligence community and the State Department and many of his DOD subordinates, he left the Pentagon immediately after Rumsfeld.
As Tim Shorrock, one of this country’s best and most-experienced investigative journalists, reports for CorpWatch, Cambone has been hired by a British-owned contractor which has just obtained a multi-million-dollar contract from a Pentagon office that was reprimanded by the Congress for spying on anti-war activists.
